Mamma Mia Movie: Will It Be Good?

What do you guys think? I just posted my thoughts on the Mamma Mia movie on my blog, but I want to see what others think?

What do you think is going to be really good about the movie? What are you not sure about? What do you think will be bad about the movie?

I'd say this clip is pretty good proof she can do a musical: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-d2i4PhqlM

Whether she'll be good as Donna I'm not sure...but I'm thinking so...
The_Megster

i think mamma mia can defiantly carry its self as a movie because its not to dramatic, its fun... so hopefully theres not to much to screw up, but they could prove me wrong, we'll just have to wait and see

And films that are dramatic can't carry themselves? Or do you mean just musical films that are dramatic?

I've got news for you. The Phantom of the Opera wasn't a flop because it was dramatic. For many other reasons, yes. But not because it was dramatic.

For me the #1 reason the PotO movie didn't work was Gerard Butler's crappy singing. Mad And his acting didn't successfully personify "the phantom". The film had other problems but replacing Butler with a more competent singer/actor would have helped the film a great deal.

Movie musicals have traditionally been light comedies so Mamma Mia! should fit the mold quite well. But I'm not a big fan of classical Hollywood musicals (although there are some I like) so I hope Mamma Mia! will be more representative of a 'modern' movie musical. Sorry, but I'm not sure how to define that.

i quite like the idea of brosnan

i assume he's playing sam?

as long as he can sing well i think he'll be perfect, and they wouldn't have cast him if he couldn't sing.

Meryl Streep is a very experienced singer (you can hear her sing solo in the international trailer-frickin amazing!)

Brosnan is indeed Sam
Colin Firth is Harry
Stallan Skarsgaard (sp?) is Bill
Christine Baranski is Tanya

The trailers are awsome...I'm very excited since at leats the vocal quality appears to be good.

It's currently in cinema's here. I doubt that I'll be seeing it in the cinema though, I'll wait for the DVD.

It is? Is it playing at one of the Pathes?
brdwaybeauty

I think it will be really cute!
LittleGavroche

Anybody else excited to see The History Boys' Dominic Cooper sing? I love him.

If anything, I think both Brosnan and Streep look the part, but I've yet to hear much from them singing-wise.

I think the film will do fairly well, despite the fact that it's opening the same weekend as The Dark Knight. Rolling Eyes
SomeoneLikeYou

I'll be seeing it!

If it's anything like the show...

no.

I've just seen the Song List, and the way they've edited the list makes me ill.. They've removed "Thank You for the Music" which was an amazing stage song! I just sat there and wish I had all my friends their just so they could feel the amazing feelings that the song brings to real music fans. "Knowing Me, Knowing You" was the best song featuring a male in the show, I love how Sam just pulls of "Knowing Me, Knowing You" right after Sophie exits the stage. They've also removed "Under Attack" and "One of Us" which is ok by me, since I'm not a huge fan of those songs, but the scene which features "One of Us" is so sweet. I loved the entire scene! And they've putt "Our Last Summer" in the place of "Thank You For the Music" so I'm going to miss the lovely memorizing of the last summer of Harry and Donna, which is a very cute scene! And then they've putt "Take a Chance on Me" after "When All is Said and Done" instead of before the wedding ceremony, which I think mess up the most laughable sequence in the entire show!

YES! I love Cooper, and all the History Boys. I'd support all of them in their careers.
LittleGavroche

Very Happy I love them. 'specially Cooper and Samuel Barnett [Posner <3]
He's got such a pretty voice. Love to see him in a musical.

I don't know how well "Thank You For the Music" would work on screen. It's really sweet when it's just basic, standing there and singing on a stage, but that never works in movies.
Lilithia

It comes out this Thursday in Australia. I never saw the stage show, I was a bit too young to appreciate, but I will definitely go this movie when it comes out! I am very excited to see it!!

I've just bought the Movie Soundtrack, and LAY ALL YOUR LOVE ON ME is brilliant! The orchestrations are new in almost all of the songs, and the orchestration in THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL is really good, except the fact that Meryll Streep is ruining the entire orchestration by adding her awful voice, but she sings other songs really good. The guy who plays Sam was not good at all. And the fact that they did not have CHIQUITITA on the Soundtrack (all though it is in the movie) was really disappointing..

I think the movie will be OK, Amanda Seygfried sings really good on most of her songs, and I am looking forward to seeing the movie. I am going with many of my friends, and I think it will be fun.
kozafluitmusique

I saw a preview today on ABC family...it looked weird.
music is my life!!!

I saw it in the cinema today and it was so funny! My friends don't like musicals so they kept on making fun of it Confused

hehe

i liked it though, and Walters' singing really surprised me as she was so good!
Borb

I only have money for one movie this weekend, and The Dark Knight won.
I do plan on seeing Mamma Mia! as soon as I can, even if it is not until the DVD comes out.

Personally, I think that Meryll Streep will be the highlight of this movie. Smile

By the way, I voted that it could be good or bad.
High-baritonne

Don't have to much hope, Meryl Streep is the one person who brings this movie down, along with Pierce Brosnan.
lonewriter

I don't think it's going to be very good but I don't like ABBA and the clips I saw didn't look good.
High-baritonne

How can you not like ABBA? It is one of my favorite pop groups! I actually feel kind of sorry for you..
music is my life!!!

Pierce Brosman wasn't that great, really, i thought. It was the singing.... Confused
curlyhairedsoprano91

Ohhhh my gosh. It was horrible.
I haven't laughed so hard in ages. It was, like, the "What am I watching??" kind of laughter.

This movie gives a new meaning to the term "Greek chorus."
High-baritonne

What greek chorus? The chorus is swedish.
music is my life!!!

i know, but i remember that reference too, we did greek chorus in drama

I saw this movie tonight with my mom and dad. It was goofy and silly and full of ABBA. I didn't really mind. My mom was singing along, it was sort of embarassing. But my parents had SO much fun, I have to cut this movie some slack. If I saw it with my Musical Theatre geek friends we probably would have hated it, but Mamma Mia! is pure helium fluff. Considering the crap that is Footloose the musical, All Shook Up, Hott Feet, The Wedding Singer, etc., I suppose Mamma Mia deserves its own respect for a jukebox musical.
iangraves

Lol for awhile I was obsessed with it! I must have seen it like 20 times. It died down and now I am not as into it lol. I didnt like Brosnan's voice much.
