Making the Dreamcoat

Does anyone have any information on how to make the dreamcoat. I don't know how to sew i was going to have someone help. I don't want the scenes on the coat just colors.

Thanks,
Jacob

If you're in a community production, I honestly thing the cheapest way to go is just tie-dye (sp?) a white bathrobe. Honestly. Super cheap, and it looks fine.

If you approach just about anyone with experience in sewing, they'll be able to do it. It's really not as scary of a project as it looks like provided that you've been around the block.

Though the white bathrobe idea is one I hadn't heard of, but would certainly work fine in a pinch.

How about a parachute???

As in the ones you have when you're young at school.

One of the local moms made one for our production. She said it wasn't hard. She looked at the video of the production (Donny Osmond) and copied the design. She used lots of spare scraps of cloth lying around for all the panels.

Make some mutli-colored yardage by sewing together strips of various colors.

A simple coat, and one that was used in those times, can be constructed from ......two rectangles about 16 x 22 for the sleeves
......a large piece the width of your actor's shoulders by 2 times the measurement from their shoulders to how long you want it to be. Split the width in half to a point halfway of the length for the front opening.

Match the centers of the lengths of the sleeves and the body. Sew the seam
Sew the side/ underarm seam. Finish the neck edge. You could also add a colored band to the neck edge.

For a flared bottom as appears in some versions of the show, just cut your fabric strips with a flare out at the ends from say, 24" to the edge. This only on the pieces for the body, not the sleeves.

Don't know if I explained this well, but that is how I would do it.

When I played Joseph, Our coat sucked, and was horrible...mostly cause it was a church/sunday school project and the churches first show!

It really should be the best it can possibly be. It's a huge letdown if the coat is nothing special. I've seen it happen.
