The Duchess of Mint

Madam Giry as a jealous manipulator?

Dear "POTO" Fans,

WARNING: HERE BE SPOILERS!

I was watching the movie version of "The Phantom of The Opera" today, and I noticed that when Christine is going into her room (right before we see all of the opera house lights go out), a black-gloved hand locks her into her room...just before we see Madame Giry's face! Shocked

I'm wondering if it's safe to assume that the black-gloved key-turner is The Phantom, and that Madame Giry KNOWS about EVERYTHING that The Phantom has been doing to Christine all along. I wonder if it's also safe to assume that Madame Giry doesn't stop Erik from stalking Christine because she WANTS for Christine to be hated by Carlotta, go insane, etc., so that her career will fail, paving the way for MEG'S success...

Has anybody ever heard of that theory before? What do you think of the idea? Do you think that Madame Giry breaks down and confesses to Raoul about The Phantom's history because she's a genuinely good person, or do you think that she does so ONLY because she sees that her plans for Meg are going to be ruined if Erik destroys the entire opera house?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

hmm.. I have wondered about that myself many times too! But I'm not sure she is keeping silent to make Christine fail, and Meg shine.. Meg is a dancer, and Christine is a singer.
From my point of view there can be 2 reasons:
¨
1: she is trying to help christine. After all, she of all in the opera must know how talented and powerful the phantom is.

2: she is afraid. Maeby the phantom would kill madame giry, or meg for that matter, if she told anyone.
