lyrics question

i have a lyrics question (okay.. more liek interpretation...) in Goodbye Love when Roger says "I hate the fall..." does he mean fall as in the season (since it is halloween) or fall as in the fall from a high after using drugs? Question just wondering... TAHNKS ALL!!!

There are a few ways to read this line, and as far as I know, debate still continues as to which one is the correct way Either:

A) He's referring to the season.
B) He's referring to his "falling out" with Mark and Mimi.
C) He's referring to the fact that he's screwing everything up, kind of falling in a sense.
D) He referring to the fact that he's "taking the fall" as in, all the blame is being placed on him.
E) The fall off drugs has been suggested, but is considered unlikely as he's "just coming off half a year of withdrawal."

Any possible interpretations I have missed? Maybe some that I'm wrong on? Does someone have a completely definite answer?

It could be a double entendre and have two or more of the above meanings.

Quintuple entendre?

meh...I think its the fallout between Mark and him, because it's just after their nice fight (which I seriously enjoy the vocals there) and it rhymes with "call" in the previous sentence.

I always thought April killed herself in the fall, and that's why he's losing it, because he's seeing it happen again with Mimi.

^ That's a connection I never made. Hmm, I like that one. I mean, I get the whole "I lost April, now I'm losing Mimi" thing- but the connection surrounding the time of year, it makes sense. I assume that Roger stopped using after finding April, the "half a year of withdrawal" going backwards from Christmas would be...June. Never mind, that doesn't work. Darn, and I thought we were really onto something there.

Well, that depends on whether or not you believe Mark was pre- or post-dating his film.

I think it might be a double entendre- The season of fall sucks/the falling out of their family. I'm guessing the same kind of falling out may have happened after April's death with Collins at MIT, Maureen dumping Mark and Roger dealing with his withdrawel.

I would go with the season.

The whole show is set around a year, and throughout it there are many references to what time of year it is.

Alongside that it is specified that Angel had died in October (Halloween) and they are falling apart because of this... If he died in October and this is the aftermath of the funeral, then they are literally in the season of spring.

The fact that Roger is making this statement could be relating back to his own troubles, whether that be his loss of April, or his own drg addiction, acting as another reason to hate the fall, but the actual FALL part of it is to do with the season (the word not the reasoning behind it)

Im a kiwi...we say autumn Smile

And, just to ask, what makes you assume he stopped after finding April? It could still make sense.

You're right, it's the aftermath of the funeral. However, I don't think that they're in spring-- I think it's still Halloween, because in Goodbye Love when Mimi, Maureen, and the rest are still there, Roger states that "I'm leaving now for Santa Fe," implying that he's leaving now that Angel's gone. The apartment scene (I think) happens right after that. Smile
