Lucy's hidden motive for...SPOILER ALERT!

Dear "Sweeney Todd" Fans,

SPOILER ALERT!

I was just now thinking about Lucy, and about Judge Turpin, and I decided that Lucy may have had a hidden motive for going to the surprise masquerade ball that Turpin insisted that she join him for.

As some of you may know, I believe that Lucy WAS actually slightly suspicious when Turpin claimed that he was regretful about sending Benjamin to jail, and that she ONLY went to the party to humor Turpin.

NOW I'm beginning to think that she actually had another motive for going to the party. I believe that she "wander[ed] tormented" because she desperately wanted to find Judge Turpin, talk to him, and somehow get her husband's sentence reduced, or something. I think that Lucy was actually planning to somehow return her husband, and the town's barber, to his rightful place in the town.

Of course, I don't think that Lucy would have wanted to see Benjamin AFTER the party had turned into a gang rape, because she must have been deathly afraid that if he came home, and he found out who had been with her, he'd claim that she'd cheated on him with the very man who'd put him in jail!

What do you think of the aforementioned theory?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I think it's wonderful! Very well thought out. I like it and I agree that this could have been the reason that Lucy went to Judge Turpin's ball.

That's a reasonable interpretation. If the word comes down that the judge is "contrite", then discussing a way to mitigate or abrogate the sentencing would seem like a reasonable reason for her to go. I don't think it's that hidden, even.

Wow... i didnt that of that.... Applause

I really like that theory. It makes the sane Lucy seem more interesting. The other way, she just seems like a sweet, loving, naïve wife. This way, she seems less like a stereotype.
