God, LUCKY STIFF! Incredible, and probably the most underrated show i've ever heard of. The songs are funny and beautiful, its Ahrens and Flaherty's first musical. The main characters (AKA solo songs) are
Harry Witherspoon (Tenor): a English Man from East Grinsted who works as a shoe salesman with a life as boring as his first name. Rent-overdue, cold stew when he gets home, that kind of life. Then he gets news that he has inherited six million dollars from an uncle in Atlantic City New Jersey, Uncle Anthony, hes never met. The catch is, he has to take the uncles dead body on a vacation to Monte Carlo, his last request, to get the money.
Annabel Glick (Mezzo/Sop): Works for the universal dog home of Brooklyn. Dog-loving and feisty. She's organized and isn't very social. The dog home gets the six million if Harry doesn't complete the vacation exactly as specified, so she follows him to Monte Carlo to try to find him making a mistake so the dogs get the money.
Rita LaPorter (Belter): Uncle Anthony's ex-mistress. She's legally blind and has to wear large glasses to see at all. But she rarely wears them because she hates them. Tries to be sexy and cute, but isn't at all. She's loud and obnoxious with a thick jersey accent. She is the one who shot Uncle Anthony when she thought she saw him with another woman. She has stolen the 6 million from her husband Nicky FOR Anthony, and now she's going to Monte Carlo to get it back.
Vinnie (Tenor): Rita's brother, an optometrist. He's older than his sister, though definitly less outgoing and less troublemaking. Rita told her husband that Vinnie took the money, so Vinnie goes with Rita to Monte Carlo to run from the husband, who is trying to kill him.
Luigi Gaudi (Bass): Anthony's old roomate. Meets Harry on the train to Monte Carlo and tries to escort him around the French Riviera, while Harry nervously tries to conceal that his uncle is in fact dead.
Dominique du Monaco (Belt/Mezzo): French nightclub performer. Sexy, with a french accent and beautiful voice. Harry's "surprise" from his uncle is a night with her.
Other character include: an Emcee, some waiters/belhops, southern women, etc.
The music is wonderful, the best songs being Nice, Times like This, Speaking French, Fancy Meeting you Here. you should download the soundtrack; the cast in the itunes recording is shitty tho
Phew, that was a long message, and i wrote that all from memory. I'm currently producing the show, so i know tons about it.
Audition suggestions? If you're auditioning for Rita/Dominique, go with something like Wherever he Ain't from Mack and Mabel, or Shy from Once Upon A Mattress. If you're going for Annabel (whos my favorite character personally), you should sing something like Perfect Strangers from The Mystery of Edwin Drood or Anyone Can Whistle from Anyone Can Whistle. well, no don't do that, its sondheim, but something like that. OHOHOH Unusual Way from Nine. Thats the one.
