I don't think I should speak much about the character, but something struck me when I was reading Maslon's book on South Pacific.
The Maslon book mentions that R&H and Logan wrote Cable's death into the storyline of their show, rather than reunite him with Liat. Though they may have had a choice, I have a feeling that it's in line with Michener's idea of what happens to Lt. Cable. In Michener's stories Lt. Cable is killed in Operation Alligator, rather than on the mission he embarks on with Emile.
