Lowering the rangeSo I know that a lot of people like Elphaba with all the high beltiness and huge range, but I'm wondering what people would think if it had been written in a lower range. I partially ask this out of the fact that I'm an alto who will never be able to do this part as well as a huge amount of curiousity.
Can you imagine songs like Defying Gravity or No Good Deed not ending on a high note and still bringing the same power if they were belted lower, or does the thought terrify you? Can you imagine a lower range playing the part?
--NO, I don't ask this because I'm desperate for the part and have become dillusional. However, I would like to attempt singing a few of the songs down in the lower notes (which is all I can do) and am interested to know what people's reactions might be if I ever got it posted.
Elphie? In a lower range?!? EVIL!! RUN AWAAAAY!!!
--this unfortunately is the reaction I imagine.
Any thoughts? Please keep in mind all the questions I have asked, if you have thoughts on both of them that would be great. I repeat them here in case you have sped through:
What would you think if it had been written lower? (or think you would think?)
How do you think you'd react to hear someone sing it lower?

i think that it could be pulled off.. maybe.
it could either work very well and make elphie even more powerful, or it could be horrendous..

I will try not to sound horrendous.
I'm working on adjusting the parts that get higher into something that works for the lower range so I can do it and still make it sound decent...

It could work if you can really belt

I'm in your same boat I have a feeling, so I understand completely the desire to want to adjust it for personal reasons
But I think one of the most awesome, chill inspiring moments are when she hits those notes, and so to lower them, might be a bit of a let down - at least if you've already heard them up high.
I think the songs could still be good and powerful in a different range - the story and the lyric take care of that. I don't think you would be completely scorned for doing it another way, in fact, I bet people copy you just because the majority of people in this world who like Wicked DON'T have the right range.
But I honestly would prefer it higher, if only because, like many people, I dread the idea of taking something wonderful and changing it - even if it just makes it a different kind of wonderful.

I think it would work, to be honest, but you'd have to sing the heck out of it to show the emotion. I think the high notes really show the elevated emotion in the song, and without them, you'd really need to be incredible. Because there won't be the "listen to those high notes!" effect, it will all rely on the passion and character.
