My choir went to go see it a few months ago, in Toronto. I didn't go, sadly...(my year end ballet performance was the same weekend)...but the response I got from friends was that the staging, special effects, etc., were AMAZING...the music, not so much. I loved my friend mary's line: "Well, during one song, I kind of wanted to gauge my eyes out with the corner of my program. but, ya know." Razz I would still like to see it though, for the sheer monumentous-ness (gosh, that was a mouthful [keyboard-ful?]) of the show. Mr. Green

i want to see that

I saw the show in June and it was AMAZING! Quite a spectacle! You really have to experience to understand how amazing it is! I was in the 2nd row too, so that made it even more unique, with characters right in front of you! Very Happy

I went for the Hobbit auditions at Drury Lane Embarassed (it'll be replacing The Producers in July) but was waiting around so long I had to leave for work before I got seen d'oh!
I heard alot of rumours in the line of what had happened with the Toronto production: how it had shut early, how they'd done a re-write before they brought it here etc....
Does anyone know if they're true? I honestly don't know what I think about this coming to stage - especially in musical form. I'm a musical fan but also a movie fan. But I did fall asleep in the cinema when I went to see all 3 films....you'd think I'd have given up after the first....so I don't know if it would be for me. But then do they squeeze all 3 books into about 3 hours? Thats a bit more attractive Mr. Green

I liked the show a ton, and while the music wasn't Les Mis, it fit the show and was enjoyable.

It was. the reviews were scathing.

I'm a massive LotR fan (book), but I must confess I purchased my tickets to the musical with a view to seeing something more akin to a train wreck... Wink

It did, that's why it closed early in Toronto. From what I heard, the technical and staging sides of things were completely amazing, but the show itself was a bit rubbish. Apparently it's been completely re-hashed for London though, so only time will tell.

I saw it in Toronto in August. Visually, it was gorgeous (especially the Balrog in the mines of moria-that was the best part) The singing was quite good, although the male vocals leave a little to be desired. The best song was the one Galadriel sang. She was thebest vocalist too. I remember my sister whispered to me during the show that the woman playing the part HAD to be black (she was latina, her name is Rebecca Jackson Mendoza) Legolas was the one male vocalist with a smooth voice (he also played the phantom in "hey mr producer").

Over all, the show was incredicble, but the story did drag, so I'm hoping that they will do some massive editing.

p.s. Gollum was f***ing incredible too! I almost forgot to mention him

NO! this guy was in a more recent production. I've forgotten his name and I don't have my programmes with me right now, but I rememer he was quite young, and latino/darkskinned.

sorry for the confusion Embarassed

Err... As far as I know, there is/was only one 'Hey, Mr Producer' which was a charity theatrical concert celebrating the shows produced by Cameron Mackintosh.

This was in Toronto about a year or two ago, so that's why you probably never heard about it. Legolas's name is actually Gabriel Burrafato (something like that, my memeory is a little fuzzy on his last name). You might recognize him as a certain "dancing quarterback" on SNL's version of Superstar with Molly Shannon (I think? , once again, my memory is fuzy on his bio details). I hope this clears things up for you. Very Happy

Ewwww

Ugg, the very thought, some things are not meant to be musicals and do not work on stage.

Cheers

It was fun to imagine Colm Wilkinson playing Legolas. Why not let Michael Crawford play Aragorn and Sarah Brightman play Galadriel? I bet a few LOTR fan girls might be a little surprised.

Yeah, and I felt that the Peter Jackson films were a mistake. I love the Tolkien books way too much, I don't want the movies to destroy that.

You see, it goes both ways.
