Little Shop AuditionHi!
(i already posted this in the audition forum but i though since lots of people on this forum have probably been in this show, you might be able to give me advice based on your experience. thanx!)
I'm 16 years old and I have an audition for LSOH in late September. I really, REALLY want to be an urchin. I'm a mezzo with a powerful belt. I can belt to a D, occasionaly an E. (Somes past roles I 've played that used my belt were Bet in 'Oliver', Annie in 'Annie') I know that the urchins are belters, and I don't think that the director or music director has ever heard me sing before, so I'm trying to find an uptempo song, similar to the style of LSOH, that shows off my belt. I think I might be too young to be an urchin, but I really think that, vocally, I could play one. I'm really having trouble finding an audition song. I'd really appreciate any suggestions!!! Thanx!!!

Song for UrchinsWell, you could try any number of blues-y jazz/pop numbers from the 60s, since that's the style of songs the urchins sing.
We had callbacks for them today at my high school, and the director went for girls who were all the same height -- it didn't matter if they were freshmen or seniors! So no big. (Just hope you're not too tall or too short.)
I almost always audition with a song from the show. Some people say that's bad, but it's only backfired for me once in seven years, and that's because I was "pushing too hard" to reach a really high note and the director freaked out and thought I'd pop a blood vessel or something.
Anyway, easy songs that you can jazz up and sing in your belt range are:
1. Summertime
2. Moon River (my last director really liked this song)
3. When the Saints Go Marching In
4. Any Nat King Cole Song
5. Or (and this might sound odd, but it's a good move) a Disney tune, since the guy who wrote the music for LSOH wrote music for a lot of Disney musicals.
Good luck and break a leg!
