Little Red RidingHood's CharecterThis year, I'm performing as Little Red Riding Hood from Into the Woods and we have just started. You know the orginal broadway show with Danielle Ferland?Well instead of a smart-mouthed brat, I instead have to make her nieve and innocent. Would anyone have any tips for this and how she should act after the wolf eats her?
Also, tips for how to scream without losing your voice would be highly appeciated.

I really don't like your idea at all. It pretty much takes away from the point Sondheim is trying to make. You are not supposed to sympathize with Little Red, like you do with the original grimm fairy tale. She's not supposed to be likeable. She's supposed to be a fairly selfish, nasty, bitchy little girl. If you make her fairly nice and innocent, she'll lose everything Sondheim wanted her to be.
I'd seriously reconsider your character choice.

Jenny is right. Red needs to be nasty and selfish to prove one of the 3000 points in this show.

I didn't choose how I wanted her to be. The directers did. They decided that's she totally nieve and innocent, But still is bratty, selfish and totally has no idea how bad wolves are. So don't yell at me for changing her when I asked for tips and advice.
Besides, I thought the whole point of this thread was to ask for some tips for her, so I described how I have to show her as. Not to be yelled at for changing her. Because, she isn't atually didn't changed that much. She is still just as bratty and selfish, but the directers wanted to emphaize that she has no idea how bad wolves are. That is all. She justs acts more innocent around the wolf. Nothing more, nothing less, she's still the same and she never shows that innocence ever after again.

Re: Little Red RidingHood's CharecterFirst of all, let's be nicer to people who are offering you CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. Dear God you were rude. You really oughta thicken that skin up a bit, because theatre is all about criticism. We were giving you criticism, as we have every right to.
Now let's look at these quotes, shall we?

Second of all, you're flip flopping here. Either you're trying to dig yourself out of the Stupid Hole that you dug, or you yourself don't really understand where you're supposed to be going with this character. Red is never innocent. She knew EXACTLY what she was doing when tempting that wolf. She just didn't expect any consequences to really happen to her.
I think it's interesting to look at the symbolism here. I believe this is supposed to be about rape, no? Either it was in the original story or.....dear God, something like that. Either way, follow me here. Think of things from a rapist's point of view. They see a hot girl in a short skirt dancing provocatively in a club. The girl leaves, the man flirts with her, she flirts back. He then overpowers her and rapes her. She comes out of it dishelved, scared, worried, and many other emotions that I can only imagine. Now imagine the same thing happening to Little Red. She was flirting with disaster. Everyone knows a wolf can eat them, but she was almost daring him to. Now make sure that you add in the personality trait of brattiness and youth. You could even say she thought herself invincible, whatever. The point is that THAT is as far as her naivity goes. When she is eaten by the wolf then saved, she knows now what can happen when you flirt with disaster. Does this change her brattiness? No. In fact, she reacts the way she does to the situation because she IS bitchy and selfish. She no longer continues to "flaunt it" but she still doesn't really learn to listen to people, either. What does she learn? Carry a knife.
This is quite a rant, and I'm hoping RainbowJude, Ciaron, or Font will come by it and rip it apart to make it a bit more factually accurate. My point is made, though, and my advice is given. You can either choose to pout because it might not match up with yours, or you can maybe try and adapt some of your characterization to fit it.

Re: Little Red RidingHood's CharecterI said harsh things, but they are entirely true. I described how I was portraying her to help people understand why I was asking for advice in the first place. You can give me critism all you want and I will accept it, but I still will try to prove my point if I think I'm still right. And trust me I can be wrong. We can argue this point all we want, but I still think I may be right on this topic: Little Red's Innocence.
You are saying that she's flirting with danger and gets raped(eaten). Well that might be true if she was older than 10! We are talking about a little girl. When you were that age, did you really know alot about rape and abuse?Did you really ever think that the nice man you just met might not be that nice?I highly doubt it. So she gets eaten. After that, she really knows about that stuff. Yes she is bratty and selfish, but she must have been really nieve to listen to a wolf that she just met instead of her mother's advice. True she wasn't expecting that wolf was more interested in making her his lunch, but is anyone really expecting to be raped/eaten? So she learns from her mistake, now carries a knife and listens to her mother's advice! At the end of the play she's not as bad as she used to be either! Offers to be Jack's mother, helps kill the giant, and cries over her dead familly. Yes she's a horrid child, but she isn't as bad as everyone makes her out to be.
I'm still open for critism, suggestions, or tips. As for RainbowJude, Ciaron, or Font and I suppose Jenny too, you are welcome to come and yell at me somemore. Might as well declare today, yell at ConverseSneaker day while we are at it.

You are right about her being naive in act 1. However, she is still very bratty which is why after learning all she did she becomes MEAN instead of cautious.
If she was a nice little girl the whole show the witch would have nothing to blame her for at the end.

Yes!!!!Some agrees with me here that's she not as bad as she seems! Yes, she doesn't become all sweetness and joy, she is pretty nasty for a little girl, but atleast she's not the demon's child.

One of the things that has always attracted me to the character of the little red is how complex she is. To the girl playing her: I think you need to have a conversation with your director. You seem to think you are playing a ten year old girl. I'm taking a guess that your director wants the audience to see an innocent girl in the beginning, but that's not who she is or becomes at the end of the show. I agree with the dance club/ rape side of the character. Like i said, if you are confused on what to do with this character make sure you've had a long conversation with your director before coming and asking people who each have their own idea of how little red should be played and portrayed. I hope your performance has not occured yet. Little Red maybe the youngest of the speaking bunch (babies excluded) but she's no child. She's on the brink of womanhood. Ready to explore her sexuality. Which is why she decides to take some time off her given path with the wolf. Have you met a young boy that makes your heart beat a little faster yet? Think about what you might do if you've always done the safe thing all your life and this boy that makes you feel funny or giggly wanted to hug you. Or kiss you? Or offer you pot? Or ask you to bunjy jump and your afraid of heights. If your not comfortable with the sexual think about the bunjy jumo. Its this big life changing experience that someone conieveing convinced you to do. You notice things you didn't before. Flowers off your path. Like I said this is my opinion, but good luck and see if you can have a sit down w/ your director if your really stumped. As I director I was always there for my actors if they needed to discuss character things.

I was really hoping this post would never be brought up again. Hopefully it never will again. emmy05, don't worry, I figured it all out, and since the show's been over for a month, I don't need to worry about it anymore. Thanks for the advice though, I'll remember it if I ever have the slightest chance of playing Red again. I miss her, and my cape and dagger, and the awesome prop ever: the suitcase! Part prop, propbox and chair!

Sorry for bringing it up, but I'm glad to hear you miss playing the character. I haven't been on the boards in a long time. Probably over a year. I miss the ITW forum. So it seemed recent, but I didn't realize how old it was until after I had written majority of it. Good luck on any future auditions.
