Little Girl for Chip?

My company is doing Beauty and the Beast for May next year, and I'm gearing up for an audition for Belle. My little sister has been wishing and hoping and waiting for a role that she could possibly do - alas, Chip seems to be the only one.

I was wondering if girls playing Chip is often done? My sister is probably 4'11, but she's very slim and hasn't.. 'developed' at all yet. She also has short hair, is a soprano and is quite flexible (I suppose that would be an advantage when being folded into the costume). She's desperate for a role - her last audition really threw her confidence.. it was for Annie Get Your Gun, she didn't even get a callback and the children were pretty much cast from the sons and daughters of the directors friends, despite being an open audition. Does she have a chance?

Most definately! Girls play Chip very often, it's not uncommon at all.

In one production I saw, they had two boys for Chip but neither could go on so the daughter of one of the actors did Chip. She did fine.

I've seen a couple of girl chips. Then usually a little boy is just used at the end when everyone turns back into humans.

I would say her chances depend on whether or not there are any decent boys going out for the audition.
When we did Beauty they wanted to initally cast a boy, but none of the boys could sing the role so we had a girl play Chip and it worked out great.
Beauty also has some children's roles they are in the chorus but it all depends on what the director wants to cast. We had about 10 kids or so in the cast. One was the dormat, and another as a footstool both did some tumbling work.
Hope that this helps.

Even if a girl is cast as Chip, there's no reason why a boy must make the "human" appearance at the end. Little girls have been playing little boys for ages.

Oh there's no reason they must. Just in the productions I've seen, it was a girl as object Chip and then a little boy replaced them after the trasnformation.

Mmmmm, it is a bit worrying that we had 3 perfectly sweet little Gavroches in Les Mis last year, though two of them would be too tall by now to have a chance at Chip.

Hmm, I'm really hoping for her.. she's really quite talented (hard to admit about my sister), but she always gets overlooked or pipped at the post by stage brats, and takes it rather badly.

But thank you guys!

As everyone else said, I wouldn't see a problem with a girl Chip. I've only seen a couple productions of BatB, but I'm fairly certain that in one of them, Chip was played by a little girl. When they're all wrapped up in that costume, it's pretty hard to tell... So as long as she's the best choice, I think she'll have a good chance. Good luck to her! Very Happy

I played Chip in fourth grade when my school did Beauty and the Beast. Personally, I love the part and think it's so much fun to play!

Aww I don't see why not? When I saw the UK Tour last August, I swear that Chip was played by a girl, but I looked in the programme and guess what - it was a boy! I hope that your little sister is sucessful - she's so lucky to have an older sibling who can relate. When I was young I had no one to relate to, as my little sister was too young Sad Anyways good luck and update us! Very Happy

yeah..let us know..and I totally think chip could be played by a girl..definitely Very Happy good luck to you and her both. She does sound like she could fit the role quite well.

Whoops, didn't even realize that you were auditioning as well! Good luck to you, too, of course. Mr. Green

Our Chip was a girl. Of course, at the end (on the video tape) when she ran to hug her mom, her hat flew off. But I don't think that matters.

I just did Beauty and the Beast about a month ago, and we had a girl play Chip and she was adorable.

oh and good luck on the audition.
