LION KING in South Africa

The Lion King has finally made it to South Africa and I'll be seeing the production on the first weekend in July. The show is opening a brand new theatre in Johannesburg and there is lots of buzz around the show at the moment, with a six-part "making of the South African production" show being screened on TV and appearances on talk shows and so on. The official site for the SA show is here.

Online articles, dating from 2006 - present:

22 May: For export: Mzansi's finest: About SA performers in the London production.

7 June: 'Lion King' opens in South Africa: NY Times article about opening night.

In previews since 22 May, the show officially opens on June 6. When the reviews appear, I'll post links for those interested.

I've spoken to a woman on another Audition website and she was one of the final actresses considered for Shenzi, the female hyena. Smile

I bet it'll be AMAZING in its native languge... Shocked I hope they do a recording or something.

There was a story about this on the news the other night.

They were saying about how Lebo wrote it with terms of his life involved. And the theatre was built specially for The Lion King.

Watching the "making of" documentary that's on here at the moment is really interesting. The first two episodes were about the auditions, and it was interesting to see the people as they were put through their paces. The really great stuff started in the third episode where they started looking at rehearsals. It's interesting to see how much this show means to people in the cast. And Julie Taymor is wonderful!
