Lion King Casting

When i was 5, and i saw the disney movie, The Lion King for the very first time, i fell in love with it. 12 years later its still my favorite movie, and story. i hope to someday make it to broadway, along with many other people lol, but if i ever do make it..i was wondering
i've never seen the lion king on broadway before (which makes me incredably sad), are there any roles for people who are not african american? all the pictures i've ever seen of the show, everyone is african american. so, are there any roles for me?
Fantine

For a woman, no...

You might be really lucky and get into the ensemble, but I doubt that.

The only roles that have Caucasian actors are those of Scar, Timon, Pumbaa and Zazu.
beck

aww damn.
although, i'm an alto..hardly a mezzo..but as weird as this is, i can sing tenor, or bass. i have a wide variety of voices and i can easily sound like a man.
so you never know, if i ever get the chance, maybe i could be a male role in the show!....or get a really dark tan haha Smile

Many members of the Australian company are aborigine or Maori -- not many who aren't originally from South Africa are of African ancestry. And the current Scar on tour, Kevin Gray, is half Chinese.

Well... I'm sure if you had some kind of exotic look, (like a natural tan,) you could get in. At least, that's what my firend's mom says. (One of her students in her dance academy played young simba in the Toronto production. She told me a little about the casting.)

You also need dancing skills too, major dancing skills.

oh and by the way, what about Shenzi, she wouldnt have to be african, or tanned or whatever.

I know that. That is why I was talking about Caucasian actors.

well you said that the only caucasian actors are those of Scar, Timon..etc. She was correcting you, because the actor for Scar is Chinese, and being Chinese and being caucasian are not the same. To get into technicalities, caucasians are people with ancestry tracked back to Europe, North Africa, West Asia and Central Asia. China is in East Asia. Making the Chinese, not caucasian.

Yes I know who Caucasians are, I just misread TVAW's point. I missed that she was talking about Asians performing as Scar.

But overall my point was that those four roles are the only ones that are possible to be played by white people.
beck

Ahhhh okay, what a misunderstanding lol.

But i asked before, and no one answered me..what about Shenzi, the female Hyena.
Fantine

Ah right. Shenzi... Well I only know this about the Dutch production, but Shenzi was African in that production.
moorhunhe

And also African in the London production.

Mostly Shenzi and Banzai are "African", Ed not I believe.
convict24601

The Shenzi I saw was African too, but isn't the OBC Shenzi Caucasian, or is it just me? (Looking at the pictures)

Does anyone know if Jeff Binder is still in the touring company as Zazu? thanks --
