Lesser Done Musicals

Ok, so I was wondering how to suggest to the director of our theatre company to do some lesser done shows. Well, they are lesser done here. A lot of us would like to see the following done:
Sweeny Todd
Pirates of Penzance
Hair
Jekyll and Hyde

Here are some of the shows we have done:
Grease
Brigadoon
Godspell (auditions tomorrow)
JC Superstar
Joseph
Cabaret
Chicago
42nd Street
Les Mis

So how does one suggest, nay, persuade a director to consider a show like Sweeny Todd following a season with Brigadoon?

What is the basis for their decisions? Usually the subscriber base of community theater helps dictate the choices, or the mission of the company drives selection, along with practical considerations like # of cast/orchestra required, availability of sets/costumes, and marketability.

Find out how/why they make their choices and then make your arguement based on those factors.

a theatre should never let the audience eeside thats death.

Well, we have access to costumes, as big an orchestra as we need (best school of music in central Canada)... about the only thing we have problems with is our stage manager person. Like, he works all the lights and the pulleys but he is associated with the theatre we work with, not the theatre company. He told us we werent allowed to do Cats because he didn't want to have to do the stage setup for it, and during Grease he wouldn't put the bridge over the pit... So I guess he is our limiting factor.

I think Sweeney Todd would be a little difficult to pull off.

Please do Hair.

Any opportunity I can, I try to get people to do it. It's an amazing experience, and needs to be done way more often.

So I see that you've already listed that, but for real, try it out.

Hair has the nude scene remember.

I can't tell you the number of times that the younger members of our community theater sit around saying: "Oh Mrs. A., we need to do '...'", or
"you should put up '....'". Don't get me wrong, I appreciate their enthusiasm. But there are more considerations that need to the selection of a show than what actors may want to do.

Personally, aside from all the financial/casting/set/costuming requirements, if I don't enjoy the show myself then I probably won't be willing to spend 3 three months rehearsing and performing it.

Moby Dick: The Musical is absolutely hilarious.
I am in it now, and we are closing tomorrow.
It's such a high energy show, and it's a lot of fun!
You should look into it. It sounds so lame at first, but it really is great!

Zomie Prom is another good musical Very Happy
Angel-of-Music*

Return to the forbidden planet is great fun and the set stays the same all the way through so the stage manager cant complain. it has the most fun songs ever, and the audience participation is great Very Happy

It is indeed a great show.

Just So is another good one, especially if there are a lot of children in the group.

I also like The Hunting Of The Snark but it's just a tad too obscure, both in content and knowledge.
Sweeney Hyde

On a Clear Day You Can See Forever is not done very much at all and it is very satisfying for those that see it. It has some book problems, the ending leaves much to be desired, but the music and lyrics are great. It also has five excelent parts in it. I have never heard of a high school doing it, though.
