Lent... What Are You Giving Up Then???

I'm not giving up anything but thought I'd ask if any of you plan to give something up for Lent...
Sweeney Hyde

I'm not either! My church doesn't partake in Lent!
phantomphan85

Coca-Cola, I'm addicted to the stuff.
broadwaybaby124

I'm giving up snacking after 8pm. (movies and parties are my exceptions) hah
Robinflamingo

I always use Lent as a time that I can get back in control, so to speak - I give up fast food and junk, and live a healthier life. It's SUPER important this year, so I'll be doing the same. No Taco Bell for me until post Easter!

I'm giving up Catholicism! Wink

Just kidding! I'm such a bad girl...

Not giving up anything either. I'm not a very ... religious... person. Embarassed Quite the opposite Very Happy! (weee, I'm bad girl no. 2!)

I hate the whole "giving up for Lent" deal. If you give up junk food, how does that make you a better person? Instead, I like to make a resolution for Lent. This year, it's to finish the play I started writing this weekend and edit my poetry.

If I was giving anything up, though, I'd swear off MdN. No offense to you guys or anything, but it's kind of taking over my life!

The idea is that if you give up something wordly that's valuable to you, it will help you focus on your spirituality because you won't be spending time and energy on something trivial. It also makes you a better person by building your resistance to temptation. Let's say you're giving up chocolate and you happen to have a sudden urge where you really want it. But you don't eat the chocolate. You've just resisted temptation. And the next time you're about to commit adultery or gossip or whatever your vice is, your resistance will be that much stronger. It's kind of risk-free practice. Because if you do give in and eat the chocolate, all you've done is eat chocolate. And then you can still learn from that, too.

I fast for Lent.

Same here!

Though, I don't know what my boyfriend's giving up (he's Catholic...I'm under the assumption Catholics do Lent [no...I did not almost type LENT, like RENT...that would be an interesting musical]) but hopefully it won't be anything that effects me.
opheliarose

I'm Orthodox Christian, and we fast from meat and dairy until Pascha (Easter). But we do it all year long on Wednesdays and Fridays, and the Dormition Fast and the Nativity fast and the Beheading of John the Baptist and a few others...

I'm resisting the temptation of Donuts and Cigs... what a combination!!

LOL! Laughing That just made me laugh out loud! Mr. Green

Well, dunno about giving anything up, but I ate wheat for the first time since xmas today: loads of pancakes!! Ay yi I feel ill now...

I'm already off wheat which means bread, pasta, pizza, pancakes, cous cous, some soups...lots of stuff. And I can't eat rice anymore.
I figure if I give up anything else it'll get even more annoyingly complicated than it is already d'oh!

Etoile

Meat. At first it was going to be chocolate but I don't think I would've made it...
Aimee

Actually, a few years ago I gave up burgers [I love them] and I never went back to eating them much after that, just the occasional one. I ought to look at my habbits and give one up then maybe it will stick.

Give up being so bloody nice all the time. Wink
norayouadora

I'm not a religious person at all, but I do like the idea of giving up something for Lent (for reasons explained by Beagle, I guess), so I do it sometimes. But I prefer to do a resolution-type thing, like "I will have my homework done every day by x time" or "I will eat more vegetables" or something... Which I suppose is somewhat like giving up procrastination and junk food, respectively. Hmm. I might have an idea of what to do this year, but I'll have to think about it some more. Think

Haven't decided what I'll give up this year, though.

I don't know what to give up. I'll probably end up not giving up anything and then at the end be like "hey, i should give up..." and give that up for a day. anyone have any ideas? oh who am i kidding i wouldn't stick with it anyway. I tried fasting once and got so hungry i gorged myself on animal crackers.

Theres different types of fasting. There's abstaining from certain foods, and then there's not eating or drinking anything at all (usually done for a short period of time, say, bbefore Communion.)

It's best to start small. My first Lent, I just avoided meat on Wednesdays and Fridays (I wasn't doing the year-long fast yet.) That's an easy habit to get into, and you can always go a step further next year.
pinkstiletto510

giving up Starbucks and all coffee drinks in general
(this means that if I go out to coffee with a friend, it cant be a Starbucks first off and i cant have anything with coffee)

not really for health reasons but more so money reasons.....teas are much less expensive than coffee
what_the_heck013

I'm not a Christian, so I won't be giving anything up (but I did get fat today...hehe).
eponine5

I'm not Christian either, so I really don't make an effort to give things up for this... but last year I gave up lentils anyway! Very Happy
mtgirl118

I'm giving up snacking while watching TV. I have to turn the TV on mute or off when I eat.
Fasting day today. At first I was worried because I was going to go to swimming tonight and I'd have no energy but then my dad said Mass is during swimming so I have to go to Mass.

I've decided I'd like to give up insomnia. I doubt my body will let me though.
Matthew

I'll give up giving up things.

I don't want to change my life right now, it's going pretty good.
If anything, I should give up my parents.
