Len Cariou interview on SiriusAnybody ever listen to Seth Rudetsky's Studio A Cabaret on Sirius Satellite's Broadway's Best (channel 6077)? He interviewed Len last week and it'll be rebroadcast tomorrow, March 5, at 5 eastern/2 pacific. Cariou gives his impressions of ST (the original and the Burton production), shares his anguish over losing the 11 o'clock number in ALNM to Glynis Johns, and expresses irritation at having lost the 1973 Tony to Ben Vereen before wrapping the interview with a raspy-but-stunning version of SITC. Great stuff for fans of the original Frederick and Sweeney; if you're of like mind and you get Sirius, check it out.

Hate him, huh? Admittedly, he used to get on my nerves too, but he won my respect with his piano playing as well as his general exuberance, and apart from the occasional banal or "gotcha"-type question (which I figure are for more casual listeners, not afficinados) I think he runs a good interview.
Honestly, though, I listen more for the studio performances than for the talk, and on that note, I really did think Len's SITC was breathtaking. What he lacked in the vocal chops department he more than made up for in the performance; in fact, it was one of the best acted versions of the tune I've ever heard.
Interesting about the gravedigger's dirt getting in his throat and his doctor calling Hal Prince, too, I'd never heard that one before.

the thing I hate about Seth is that he bashes great performers like Glenn Close and praises sloppy ones like Patti LuPone.
He also shows how ignorant he is of theatre when he dismisses legit theatre constantly and only praises musicals.
I really would love to call up and tell him off over the air.
oh and asking John Cullum what dress he was wearing to the Tonys didnt gain my respect either.

What's not legit about musical theatre?Dear Salome,
What's not legit about musical theatre?
I've listened to that show on occassion, and I think that it's really cool that the host actually has connections with some of the actors who are currently starring on Broadway.
Thanks in advance for your reply.

the common term for plays is "legit theatre".
Seth is an ass who doesnt understand the theatre at all. all he cares about is if a show is sung on key.

I disagree. Seth is an accomplished professional accompanist who understands musical theatre quite well. He's the host of a musical theatre show on Broadway's Best, a musical theatre station that plays musicals, not excerpts from Glengarry Glen Ross. For programs that focus on entertainment genres other than the musical, see every other talk show in the universe.

I don't know about "all," but yes, he seems to think that professional productions of musicals are spoiled by off-key singing... but that's hardly a controversial opinion, in my experience.
Anyway, to anyone's who's interested, Seth's interviewing Menken this week, they both play, it's great. Lots of good stuff on Ashman too.
And mezzo: SITC = S end I n T he C lowns.

I'm not saying peole hsould be off key. but the point of musical theatre isnt to isang pretty its to sing in character! a pretty voice doesnt make you an actor.
also..its not that he doesnt play exerpts from plays on the radio that would be assinine. what pisses me off is that he dismisses legit theatre by saying stuff like "ohh thats not a musical so i dont care".
I think he is a total disgrace.a bufoon and a moron.
he is a musican's freind not an actors freind. so dont let him talk theatre.
I wish Christine Pedi had more time..she is the only good host that channel has.
