Least Favorite Sweeney SongJust vote and say why you don't like the song or how you chose it. I left out Epiphany and A Little Priest because I feel they are the show stoppers and the point around which the whole show revolves. Any others I just left out because you can only post 10.

^I felt the exact same way about Green Finch, but then I saw it on Broadway with Lauren Molina, and it was amazing. I think in both DVD versions it was just poorly acted. The singing was nice but the acting was just bland. But Lauren Molina brought so much energy to the role, and actually made the words mean something! (Which is what Sondheim's about anyway )

I refuse to pick. I love Sweeney too much to insult on of it's songs, but I am in obsession mode with it right now, so my opnion may change.

I'm going to defend the honors of all these songs.
By the Sea- This song is a bit annoying and it slows the show down, but I feel like it tells a lot about Lovett's character. If you're one that believes that all along, Mrs. Lovett loved Sweeney and that she had been planning for his return, this song furthers that by displaying how she dreamed of him.
The Worst Pies in London-This song introduces Lovett. It gives the audience their first impression of her. It's also important as it's reprised later.
My Friends- This is one of Sweeney's shining moments. You can truly see how dark and insane he is. Lovett's part also contrasts well.
Green Finch and Linnet Bird- The chick on the DVD (Lansbury and Hearn) overacts a bit and I personally do not like that. The rendition of this song which totally makes me appreciate it is Lauren Molina as Johanna in the 2005 revival. Not only is her voice gorgeous, but she sings it sweetly like a 16 year old would. I also feel that this song has beautiful lyrics and a lovely (although stereotypical) metaphor. The stereotypicalness of the lyrics and the overly classic style (that is done in the DVD) sort of show Johanna as an overly stereotypical classic female romantic character.
Johanna (Anthony)- Again, gorgeous lyrics. It's important because it makes its reprises somewhat more meaningful. And it's a beautiful melody.
Pirelli Sequence- The lyrics are funny "Nope! It was ada Pope!". Again stereotypical ness. It almost shows Pirelli's fake-ness.
Kiss Me- This song is a bit boring until you have the fugue with "Kiss Me" and "Ladies in Their Sensitivites". I get chills every time/
Johanna (Judge Turpin)- Nobody could POSSIBLY hate this song. I love it because you really get to peer into Turpin's mind. He becomes a real person instead of a one-dimensional villain.
So which is my least favorite song in the show? None. I find "Now While I'm Around" boring and it slows the show down, but the song is beautiful. Great melody and lyrics. And I think the 2005 revival gave this song extra meaning.
Honestly, though there is no bad song in Sweeney as they all have some purpose... or good lyrics/tune.

The only song in Sweeney I cannot stand..its "No While I';m Around" UGH! I cant believe sondheim wrote it. melody wise I mean. the lyrics are good..but it slows the show down to a screeching halt!
I';'d prefer the scene to unravel in dialouge.

I find Toby to be the most annoying character in the show. even with Ken Jennings playing him.

I like every song. The only parts I don't like, is those OO-OOs when LuPone sings By The Sea.

Angela did that too. It's written in the music.

I know the Oo-Oos are written in the music. But as Salome points out, they sound terrible when LuPone's doing them.

I'm sorry. I just realized which Oo-Oos you were talking about, Dvarg. I will admit they are a little odd sounding. I love Patti in Sweeney though. I think she brought things to the character that Angela didn't. I think LuPone was a scarrier, more vicious, more ruthless, stay away from my man type. Angela is probably funnier and brought more of the aboslute craziness of Lovett out.
