Learn to be lonely: yay or nay?As it says.
I kind of like it and then again I don't. It's a bit too much "Phantom Angst" for me. It's beautifully sung though.

I agree, it wouldn't be right if they actually put it into the movie (although there is some underscore at some times during the movie) but Mini Driver sang it beautifully. brava!

I like it as a song, but I don't really like it in the context of Phantom. Even though it's not actually in the movie, but you get what I mean. Hopefully.

It's only so long until Andy puts it into the show- he'll make a big deal and release a new cast recording or twenty of it then. Like the three or four exactly identical Joseph recordings.

Maybe the song will appear in the Phantom Sequel...
Anyway, I think the song itself is very beautiful. The melody is very plain and simple - and that's why it is so haunting and beautiful. Just like "You Must Love Me" in EVITA or "I Don't Know..." in JCS.
So I say YAY!!

I like the song, but I agree that it shouldn't be a song in POTO. It's a nice credits song.

music is my life!!!

i like it!
it meant that Minnie Driver could show that she can sing as well as playing Carlotta, and not singing

It does seem a little bit as if they only put it in so Minnie Driver could say: "There, you see? I CAN sing. I just wasn't good enough to do opera but I kick ass singing popish songs."

Isn't it the same tune as the song the Phantom sings that was cut from the movie? It's an ok song, I guess, and would be more suited to incorporate into the stage show than for example You Must Love Me into Evita, since it brings the character unneeded sympathy.

Well, I think that it's a nice song, but the No One Would Listen lyrics are a lot more phantomish...
It's still nice though; a fitting song to have the POTO story come to a close.

It'll end up in the sequel, ALW recycles like a Womble.

Definitely!
The song gets neither "nay" nor "yay" from me. It gets a big yawn.

Learn to be Lonely - nay.
No One Would Listen - yay!

In my pre-sense days, I did Learn to be Lonely in a camp performance. People seemed to like it. But I don't think it's particularly fabulous.
I like the idea of a real character development solo for Phantom, but I'm not the hugest fan of "No one would listen" either.

It shouldn't be put into the show, it is completly the wrong style for the show. The only reason it was added was so the film had an original song, that could be nominated for an oscar.
