lead in play vs lead in musicalHey-- i just wanted to ask a general question specifically to any high school theatre directors out there. Would you cast the same senior as the lead in the play and the musical, even if there are other talented seniors?
Here's my dilema. I am a singer, and I pride myself in my voice. So I want the lead in the musical. However, auditions for the play are coming up and I don't know if I should shoot for the lead or a smaller point, because I want the lead in the musical.
More info: we don't know the musical yet. I'm a senior. I've had small-to-medium parts in the plays before, and large-to-lead roles in the musicals.
any help...? thanks!

I'm not a high school theatre director, but from what I saw in high school, it all depends entirely on your ability as well as audition. There were people at my alma matter high school that got leads in plays, but not leads in musicals, and vice versa.
What is the play? Missed your edit about the musical.

Ooh, that's a tough one.
In my experience (though I've never been a high school director, I know several) directors in the school setting tend not to want to cast the same people in lead roles in the same year, especially if there are other equally talented students, in order to allow the maximum number of students the opportunity to star in a show.
That said, I still think you should go and audition for Steel Magnolias, even if you are hoping for the lead in the musical. First of all, it is an amazing show with six fabulous roles for women, none of which would really be considered "the lead". Second of all, since you don't know yet what the musical is, you don't want to pin all your hopes on that, only to find out that they have chosen a show that doesn't have a suitable role for you (not saying that this will happen, only that it might). Thirdly, I don't know how casting works at your school, and it is entirely possible that your director would cast the same actress in lead roles in both the play and the musical, if said actress was the best one for both roles.
Hope that helped, even if just a little.
