Lady Larken Troubles

I just got cast as Lady Larken in my school's production of "Once Upon A Mattress".. and I have absolutely no idea what to do with my character!
I dont know if she should be funny, sweet, or anything!

Please help!

You should be able to get a feel for her character by reading the script.

Or did you already read it and you are still oblivious to the kind of person she is?

i already read the script.. and we've begun rehearsals.. but im just not exactly sure how I want to play her. i've gotton many an answer that she is supposed to be quirky, dumb, desperately in love with Harry, etc. etc. (all the standard larkin answers) but i want to know if anyone else sees something that i could add to her.

Talk to your Fred...I think one of the important aspects of Larkin is that she foils Fred very nicely (just like Harry foils Dauntless.) Larkin is beautiful and proper and ladylike (which underlines how much Fred isn't these things...Not to say that Fred isn't beautiful...but you get what I'm saying) but it all starts to fall apart as she gets more and more desperate (and more and more pregnant.)

My take. Smile

thanks. i'll try that.

Let me know if you have any other questions...I'm a bit obsessed with the show!

haha same. I cannot stop listening to it or rereading the script! i just hope my school doesn't butcher it.. haha

I like her desperate....our Larkin is also very sweet...and desperate.

yeah larkin has to have some desperation otherwise it makes for a bland character

And of course at times she has to be very brave.

When I auditioned for Larken last fall, I sat down and started writing notes on her. You are lucky I cleaned my desk yesterday or else I wouldn't be posting them here for you.

Larken is: beautiful, dependent, "innocent", romantic and sheltered.

How was she raised: Larken grew up with this happy fairy-tale ending in mind. The lady is beautiful, the man is strong and brave, they fall in love and get married, to live happily ever after.

Why is this a problem: Before, she and Harry were in love. Now, they are going to be parents. She is afraid of how this changes thier relationship. Fred also, ultimately horrifies her. If this is the sort of girl that Harry thinks is a lady, then what does he think of her? Of course, she's even futher insulted when he and Mabelle get together.

How does she respond to conflict: As the conflict gets worse, Larken becomes more and more desperate. If she and Harry aren't married soon, before she starts showing, what will everyone think of her? There's no happily ever after for the single mother in her fairytales. Larken's not used to being independent and making herself happy. You could say that Larken does try to be independent and run away by herself, but I think she was trying to get revenge on Harry rather than saving herself because if he really loved her, he would probably come after her to save her. But then the Minstrel and Jester and King offer to take her to Normandy and she agrees to go someplace warm like that.

How does she change: During the show, Larken must grow up from a naive girl to a true lady.

Your task: Find out why and how she changes in each scene. You are armed with a script and the songs. Why would she go to Normandy? Why hasn't she told Harry that she was pregnant yet? Ask yourself Why does Larken make these choices in this scene. Make them strong and interesting, and true to her character. If you need me, I'm here to help.

Also, star2beallie is always a wonderful person to ask about playing Larken. [/code]

dont talk to fred..never let another actor give you advice. talk to your director. thats their job.

I meant talk to Fred about how she is playing Fred.

I ALWAYS talk to the people playing parts that are related or close to mine to get a feel of what they are going to be doing. It's just getting a dialogue going.

Thank you so much! This gives me a good idea on how to create a unique Larkin. Thanks!
