Lack of male solos?I think the show's delightful the way it is, but perhaps from an actor's standpoint, I feel that GYPSY could have used more songs sung by male characters. Herbie could've easily had a song, and that would have been rectified by simply casting a singer over an actor. I have nothing against "All I Need...", but it kinda sucks that that's the only GYPSY song that a male can audition with. Although GYPSY is first and foremost a female-driven show, there could have been at least two or three more male solos. I mean, look at 1776: thirty-three male roles, yet Jefferson's wife got at least a few songs of her own.

Dumb idea. NEVER cast a singer over an actor.
Jack Klugman got the roel of Herbie because of his charm and realism.
There was a solo for Herbie caled "Nice She Aint" Klugman looked at it and told Styne to shove it. (nicely of course).
ALl the best Herbies have been minimal singers. Klugman,Malden and Ingham.

I think giving Herbie a song would have made his character too strong and noticeable. What's great about Herbie (which is also great about Louise) is his lack of attention until he erupts right before "The Strip"; For the first time in the show you really notice him and it's incredibly powerful.

Actually, "Nice She Ain't" was cut because Klugman had a terrible singing voice.

did you read what i wrote?? he knew he couldnt sing it so he told styne no he wasnt going to sing the song.
Klugman is still the finest Herbie ever..no one dleivers the "Ah Rose" bits with as much sincerity.

Is the song itself any good? I'm surprised that there's never been a "Marry Me A Little" moment with it, reinstating it into the production as was done with the above song and "Our Little World" then.

You can hear jule Styne sing it as a bonus track on the reissue CD. its not that good a song.

Why would anyone want to mess with a show that is structurally perfect? There is not a single song you could take out of Gypsy without losing a vital aspect of the show? You'd disrupt that balance by adding extra material, particularly for a character that doesn't need it.

no it wouldnt. you keep the scene but get rid of the lame song. rewrite it as a book scene. Tulsa is too minor a role to get a big song..and the song is terrible to begin with.

Are you thinking of the 1999 Columbia Broadway Masterworks reissue? If so, the track listing says that Bernie Knee (whoever that is) sings the "Nice She Ain't" demo. And I agree that "All I Need..." shouldn't be in the show. I think it's a great song to use for auditions, but like Salome said, Tulsa didn't deserve to get his own song. To that end, I think "Gimmick" should've been cut.

"Gimmick" is very much needed. it shows louise the world of burlesque after that song she is convinced she can do it.

I don’t think a book scene between Louise and Tulsa would be as effective as the song. I feel that the song creates the stirring romantic tone that is necessary for Louise to start falling for Tulsa so that it’s that more devastating when she learns that he ran off with her sister. A book scene just wouldn’t have the same impact for me.

well maybe styhe and sondheim could have come up with something better than that piece of crap they stuck in there. because i always tune out at that moment when I watch Gypsy.

Yeah, I agree. I'm not a fan of the song itself, but I think the feel of the song is vital to that portion of the show.
