Lack of emotion?I was discussing COMPANY with a friend of mine (outside of MDN) and he said that out of all the Sondheim scores, he considers COMPANY to be the least satisfying, emotionally. I wanted to see how the rest of you feel about the show's emotional resonance.

Is he insane?
Company is probably the most emotioal of his shows. with the possible exception of Follies.
The truth that resonates in "Sorry-Grateful" which is probably one of the single most emotional songs i know.
The humerous pathos of LadiesWho Lunch.
the internal cry for help of "Marry Me A Little" and the soul searing agony of "Being Alive"
how can he call that score unemotional?

I agree. Being Alive brings me to tears everytime that I hear it. Into The Woods and Sweeney Todd never do that for me. I love them very much, but they're simple not as accesible on an emotional level like Company is. It's so easy understand and relate with it.

Marry Me A Little and Being Alive pretty much tore my heart out of my chest when I saw Company. I think that's emotional enough.
then again, it was the final performance of the revival with Raul Esparza, and seeing anyone else cry (especially the cast...) breaks my heart... so that may have had something to do with it.

Exactly. Company always does that to me. The only reason ITW ever has is for a different reason than just the inherent sadness. The song "No One is Alone". But only because a really close friend of mine who played Little Red in the first production of ITW I saw recently lost her mother...
Company elicits a large emotional reaction from me without such a personal connection to the songs.

Company is the show that I connect to most, so I guess it's a bit of a personal preference. I've always been drawn to Bobby, mainly because I can indentify with what he's going through, to some degree. "Someone Is Waiting" sums up my current state of mind - believing the right person will come along yet wondering if they already haven't, and perhaps it's too late to do anything.
I think "Being Alive" is one of the most emotional songs ever written, especially if it is performed right. I own both the original and 2006 revival recordings, and have seen the song performed on numerous occasions. Depending on who's singing it, I can either feel incredibly moved or underwhelmed. Most of the time, there is a bond that I experience between myself and the sentiment found in the lyrics... particularly "but alone is alone, not alive"... something about those words strikes me and hits me with such an emotional punch. It's hard to put it eloquently, really.
But, like I said earlier, it's personal preference. Perhaps the friend just couldn't find anything in Company to relate with.
