Korean Spelling BeeThought this was interesting.
http://english.kbs.co.kr/society/events/1489990_11777.html I guess the scene is "Magic Foot" with a rather thin William Barfee. The Korean version does the audience participation thing too. Otherwise, the characters seem to be the same. Don't know if they had to make some changes to suit a Korean audience. Are they ok having a girl with "two dads"? A boy singing about his exuberant protuberance? And were they spelling English words? Also saw on Wikipedia that the first regiona production will open at the North Shore Music Theatre in Massachusetts. |

Korean is probably the only Asian language that would work for Spelling Bee, because they have their own alphabet.
Correct me, someone, if I'm wrong, but I'm not aware of any other Asian language that has it. |

I heard that in Korea they spell the words in English. If they didn't they would have major problems with translation.
As to the subject matter, I think that Korea is actually one of the more liberal Asian countries, at least the South is, and I don't think that they have a problem with the subject. Korea has had musicals that were controversial in the US, like Rent, Hair, and Spring Awakening is coming there. South Korea is not a third world country. |

Yeah, but it's not an issue of being a third world country. Some countries just have different mores. It might be more conservative or even more liberal than the US and changes might have to be made. I think Korea had Hedwig and the Angry Inch so maybe Spelling Bee is well within their 'limits'. |
