Kiss me Kate

Hey everyone.

I found out last night that my school is doing "Kiss me Kate" next year for our musical (which I'm very excited about)

Can anyone tell me about the role of Paul? I know he sings "Too darn hot", but what else is there to him?

Also, every thing I've read about him says he his a very intensive dance role. What kind of dancing exactly? Is it the type of stuff I could gradually just teach myself?

Thanks.
Salome

He is Fred's Dresser. in the script he is African American but its not set in stone.

He has a few scenes with Fred in his Dressing Room, but his big moment is Too Darn Hot.

wel i figure i'll sign up for dance classes (since i'll only be a sophmore when auditions come around, and i'd like to be considered for the role) for the summer.

Do you know what TYPE of dance I should take?

Jazz, jazz, tap, jazz, soft-shoe, jazz, ballroom. . . . did I mention jazz?
Paul can be a very fun part. He has some great scenes with Fred (leading man). He also has a love interest, Hattie (Lily's dresser). In the production I did, Paul sang his part of Too Darn Hot to Hattie trying to woo her.

he has very very few lines...hes in like 2 or 3 scenes in act one and then the act two opener -too darn hot- and then hes done for the show. keep in mind that too darn hot needs to be SOLD...so at ur audition make sure you are very big, take up a LOT of space...its more important that you can sell the dance than if u can do a leap...ur coreographer will work with u if u really sell it...when i did kmk, one of my good friends was paul and hes not a trained dancer, but he can move...he sold the song and ended up by winning a count basie award for supporting actor (hs awards ceremony in central jersey)...if not that, go for a gangster- thats what i was and it was the best part ive ever played

how can anyone hate a Cole Porter show especially KMK!

you probably think Webber is a good composer. Rolling Eyes
phantomphan85

As a matter of fact, yes I do think Webber is a good composer. Phantom of the Opera is one of my favourite musicals.

Salome, we're all entitled to our own opinions.

That being said, phantomphan85, you're fighting an uphill battle...
phantomphan85

Yeah, you're probably right. I will say no more. Neutral

alright how the heck can u say webber is not a good composer? True, his stuff is not complicated as he uses very basic chords, but look at not only the catchiness of his tunes, the popularity of his bway shows: phantom of the opera (over 8000 perf to date), cats (7485), jesus christ superstar, joseph..., sunset boulevard, starlight express, woman in white...these all have been fairly successful shows, some more than others, but he is a nice composer...porter is garbage though

JASON ROBERT BROWN ALL THE WAY!!!
Salome

sorry..you are a total moron if you tihnk Porter..one if the 3 finest lyricistcomposers who everl iveed is garbage. 895 brilliant osngs. he never wrote a bad one. webber is f*cking dreck.

I will say this: I am a major fan of Phantom...Evita and Sunset Boulevard are good too. HOWEVER...Cole Porter definatly has it up on Webber in my opinion. Porter was a genius as far as I'm concerned.
Salome

as far as anyone with a brain and intellect is concerned.
