Monsieur D'Arque

King Herod

Herod is the most flexible role in the entire show. He can be played vaudevillian, gay, Alice Cooper/marilyn manson themed, even as a Frank Sinatra type swinger. How have you seen Herod done? Or, how would you like to perform Herod?

Upside down.

Laughing

Or wearing nothing but a jockstrap.

Andy.
Master Thespian

I saw him performed as an Elvis impersonator
Your Angel

In the latest Stockholm cast ( www.jesuschristsuperstar.se ), they made Herod a half-naked pimp. My eyes are still burning. Crying or Very sad
Sean

our is a tropical themed!

the past two community theatre that did it:

made him like a biker type!

and then one more gay type but he is in a bathtub and the girls are all in towels and when he gets out the girls unfold this big towel then he wraps around himself and at the end of the number he drops to towel to go back in the tub and u see his butt!
Descartes

In the show I saw he was a pimp and Mary was one of his whores. Herod and Gals were at a pool and at the end of the song Herod turned to his girls and said "C'mon girls, let's jump!" and the synchronized diving began.

In the first production I saw, he was a gay type, and he had this sort of leaf thing that the girls were waving over him. I also saw... I think it was kind of a Broadway-style thing.

I'd love to see one with tap-dancing. LOL

BTW, Monsieur D'Arque - D'Arque rocks!!!! Smile I'm currently in B&tB and MdL owns Smile My fave song in the show Smile

That doesn't sit right with me. Especially with Jesus sitting right there.

It's been done. Broadway 1971. Paul Ainsley tap danced during the break of the song. Get the Broadway recording.

Interesting! I'll have to check it out, I'm not terribly familiar with the 1971 recording. I generally know the concept recording (the best ever, IMO... Ian Gillan!), and the new movie, though I have seen the old movie (and hated it.)

To be quite honest with you, I was thinnking of blasting you for saying you hated the JCS film.

Then I thought, that wouldn't be very nice. So I won't.

Anyway, the 1971 recording is fantastic. You get Barry Dennen as Pilate and Yvonne Elliman as Mary (who were on the concept record). Jeff Fenholt is Jesus (he's now a born again Christian and speaks out against JCS). Ben Vereen as Judas. Bob Bingham as Caiaphas (he reprised the role in the film and in Paris). Phil Jethro os Annas and Paul Aisley is Herod.

The orchestrations are great. They have a nice jazzy feel to them... which I love.

GET IT! NOW!

Matter of opinion. To me, it just wasn't up to snuff with the concept album, and the people didn't grab me. To each their own, but I didn't like it. Even the people from the concept album didn't have the same punch they had on the record.

Sean I'm not sure King Herod was so much as supposed to have been gay as Mr. Wah was PLAYING the role gay either intentionally or unintentionally...as well he is what he is lol.

Unless you meant gay as in stupid...but you certainly couldn't have...cause what have we talked about...gay=homosexual or gay =happy lol
Beagle On Stage

I would love to play Herod as slinky and seductive, dressed in full Biblical royalty splendor, and do a little striptease throughout.

Of course, my true place in JCS is as Simon Zealotes.
lalalei2001

I'd play Herod as merely unsettling at first, then truly dangerous and scary at the end. Sort of like Rik Mayall except I can sing. Razz
thebeautyisClara

Our Herod wore a white suit with a red bow tie...it was a very "Vaudeville" number. Laughing
Lazarus (Adam G)

I'd play him as a string puppet sort of like the Chicago number "Both Reached for the Gun".

He was the puppet ruler.
darthlorexa

The production of JCS that I saw just recently in my home town had Herod wearing this really old fashioned type dark red suit like something you'd see in the old movies and he had a lot of makeup around his eyes. In the instrumental break he did a tap dance number. The Herod in that production was absolutely brilliant.
lalalei2001

I also liked how Josh Mostel did Herod in the '73 movie.
Lindso

Our Herod had a glammed out biblical costume... and he put a little Myron Cope into his song (If you're from Pittsburgh you'll know what I'm talking about.)

And I also saw a production where Herod was Donald Trump. Don't ask.
AudreyTD

I'm directing JCS at the moment, and our Herod (a tapper) will be dressed in a tux with the girls being in full Follies regalia with a kick line and fan circle (a bit of Chicago's "Razzle Dazzle").

I've got a callback audition tomorrow for harod, and i dont know how i should portray it. As a female, i'm having trouble. I'm thinking really evil bitch type..but i'm having some trouble with exact actions.
thinkofMerylStreep

I see Herod as a lot like Billy Flynn in Chicago...very "Long as you keep 'em way off balance - how can they spot you've got no talents?" sort of thing.
