Kay=Kim?

Auditions were just announced for this show. I know the basic jist of it- I saw it in a high school production and know alittle bit of some of the songs. If anything, I would want to be Kim. But, is she fun to play? Has anyone on here played her?

Should I even audition? I think you all know what I look like..but I'm blonde, 17, normal weight..yadayadayada.

I'm a mezzo.
And I suck at dancing.

If not Kim, then who else should I go for? As I said, it was only a HS production I saw and probably at least 4 years ago, soooo I don't really remember characters. I just know that I don't have a lot of time now, so I don't want ensemble.

And it's a theatre I've never auditioned for before. So I have absolutely noooo idea what to expect.

Yeah, I'd say go with Kim but even better yet, Ursula (Kim's best friend.)

If you suck at dancing, you might not be such a good candidate for Kim because (as I recall) our Kim did quite a lot of dancing. Actually, the whole teen chorus had a lot of dancing.

So maybe you would want to improve that area.

It's also a character role, and some people enjoy those.

character roles are great. but Ursula isnt a character role its glorifed ensemble..

a character role is Mae Peterson or Mr. AMcAffee...Ursula has what 6 lines?

I guess it depends on how it's directed. I had Ursula prominently in every teen scene, and dialogue is only one way of revealing character.

I consider Mae and Mr. McAffee to be second leads.

I think Ursula has more than 6 lines. Not a huge amount more, but more. Plus her lines aren't just short little lines all the time either. As Robin said, in our show our Ursula was featured very prominently in many of the scenes with the teenagers and stood out as more than a glorified ensemble role-which is what I consider the Telephone Hour girls to be.

As for Kim and the dancing, it really depends on your choreographer. Our Kim only did light dancing, while Ursula actually had a lot of dancing during the teen scenes. Also for Kim, as you are a mezzo, you would need to have a high Ab I believe-which isn't that out of reach for many mezzos.

well Mae and Mr. M are second leads..or more properly..feastured roles. but they are character parts. the meaning of character role is the type of role..not the size. Ursula would be considered cameo or ensemble.

Ursula is a great part. When I did BBB ours was HILARIOUS and guess what? She won Best Supporting actress (Mae Peterson won Best Actress, party because our Rosie had already won Best Actress for the fall show).

Your Audition

You could do a ton of things. Because of your blond hair, it will make it easy to, forgive my terminology, dye. You can get a rinse color. You saturate your hair with it, it covers your hair... Let it dry... and style like normal. I bleached my hair so I could do Mae Peterson with a rinse job.

So really being blond is a great thing for a show. And Mae Peterson is a great role. Our Rosie was blond. She dyed her hair and got a spray tan. The dancing? With the right choreographer, magic can happen. TRUST me.
