Kander and Ebb recordings

So, I've discovered that Kander and Ebb wrote mor that two shows... CABARET and CHICAGO.

I have picked up a few recordings. I now have:

CABARET (revival, OBC, OLC)
CHICAGO (revival, film soundtrack)
STEEL PEER (OCR)
CURTAINS (OCR)

Haven't heard PEER or CURTAINS yet. Will crack those open this week sometime.

What other shows or versions of these should I get?

Andy.

AND THE WORLD GOES ROUND is a review that includes the highlights from their more obscure shows, and is well worth having in itself. I'd recommend this next. Other shows of theirs include Flora, the Red Menace, The Happy Time and 70, Girls, 70.

There is also a DVD of the two of them performing their songs, and similar audio CD availaable from DRGrecords.
FlamingGiraffes

I highly recommend Flora the Red Menace. Although not that well known, it is worth buying just for the songs "Sing Happy" and "The Kid Herself."

Kiss of the Spiderwoman is their finest show. but pick up the recording woth Brian Stokes Mitchell,Vanessa Williams and Howard McGillin its far superior.

also Zorba. revival castvwith Anthony Quinn.

the best Chicago recording is the London cast with henry Goodman,Ruthie Henshall and Ute Lemper.

Get the Kiss of the Spiderwoman with Chita Rivera as well. It's very good, in my opinion.

Also, The Rink (another show featuring Rivera) is worth getting. Listen for a young, unknown Jason Alexander on there.
Salome

Chita makes a lousy Aurora..too old and shrill.
Amber

Opinion.

I love ya Dawn, but I'm pretty sure everyone's opinion is equal here unless I missed the memo.

^That was awesomely stated.

And, I agree. I thought Chita brought a wonderful flavor to the role.

watch it chick..

seriously though I saw both casts. and god was rivera wrong..too old for the role and looked it.Williams was pure sex and pure perfection.
plus Carver and Crivello were dull and lackluster compared to Mcgillin and Mitchell.

its rare for a 2nd cast to be better than the original but in this case they were.

Another rather obscure K&E show is "WOMAN OF THE YEAR".

Wow! How many shows did they write together? Didn't know SPIDERWOMAN was one of theirs. I had a chance to see it, years ago. I wish I did.

You have to be kidding me! I'm not going to sit back, be scared, and shut up over that.

Anyway, jcstar, I hope that whatever you end up getting, you enjoy.

I enjoy both "...Spiderwoman" recordings because each lady has qualities that the other lacks.

I knew you'd show up in this thread sooner or later.

It's worth getting "70 Girls 70" in addition to many of the shows that have been named. The show had a lot of book problems, but it's an enjoyable score.

The other one that hasn't been mentioned that's even more worth getting is "The Happy Time" Great performances by Robert Goulet and David Wayne and some very good songs. "I Don't Remember You" ranks with their very best songs.

They also wrote 'The Act'. I have the recording. It's quite a fun show and while Liza is brilliant... She's the only voice on it. So look into 'The Act' if you like Liza and/or don't mind hearing one voice for every song.

I think they wrote 17 or 18 shows in grand total. So yeah, they're pretty accomplished. RIP Fred Ebb

One of their more obscure ones is GO FLY A KITE, an industrial show for General Electric done for 1 week only in Williamsburg, VA in 1966.
There were also film scores including NEW YORK, NEW YORK and the new songs for FUNNY LADY.
