Mumsytype

Just to make one thing Perfectly Clear.

We get some funny postings in this forum.
Postings about medication, or free films, or celebrity sites...
Now, most of you are sensible experienced people who know these are pornbot postings, and that it's either a complete waste of time or highly polluting to your computers - and your minds - to click on the links.
However, obviously someone didn't know, and had a nasty shock.

Can I just please point out that at present there's no way we mods can stop these pornbots from registering at MdN and posting their silly/nasty stuff, so although we remove the threads and ban the bots as quickly as we can, it's also up to you readers to use some sense and NOT follow the links posted, nor respond to the threads as that just keeps them at the top of the list and therefore more likely to be read. If you do open one of these threads please alert us using the blue button and/or PM. Thanks.

Here endeth today's lesson in Basic Common Sense.

Mumsytype.

Similar thread, we don't need two stickies so I am unsticking the second one.
Ulla Dance Again!

Not to worry, I moderate on another forum and we have the same spam problem... so I know what to do. Smile
jcstar

Well, let's just hope that a certain person (Laz, are you listening?) doesn't help the Spammers by responding to them.

But thanks for the note, anyway.

Andy.
Aimee

I just want to say a thank you to you all for not answerng these posts. We hopefully should have a better solution soon.
Jordan

Actually, can I just say thank you to the person who responded to one with the message "I've just blue-carded this so no-one else needs to do it" type message. In my advancing age, I forget whom it was and the exact content, but I thought it was VERY useful, saves me and the other moderators getting lots and lots of emails about the same post.

I guess what I'm asking is that in the meantime, if you guys could make ONE post below stating that it's been blue carded. This ONLY refers to those porn/viagra type messages. Whomever gets there first make the post and nobody else need press the button and we all know what the state of play is and it'd help the board imho.

So what do we do with the other type of spam messages?

*sigh* I think you were deliberately being difficult.

Mumsytype has hit the nail on the head.

I guess what I meant was that if a regular poster does something like oh, I dunno... has a funny turn and posts something objectionable within a thread it can be blue carded as much as is necessary. The spam threads are normally one-off postings by brand new members (bots). Now, is that settled?
Luc

I think that some people here may be a tad bit up-tight. Confused
Aimee

Only some? Laughing

No. You said only porn/viagra type. They do advertise things other than that. Sorry. I assumed that.. oh nevermind..
olly

New posters that have posted obscene or unsusual things, whether it be porn, viagra, golf clubs! If you see somethiing of the sort, please blue card it and post a messege in the thread explaining that you have blue-carded it, thus deterring subsequent posters from blu-carding it and taking up space in the moderator's inbox.
Jordan

It's not just me, is it? Confused
Jordan

Guys, just in case anyone was so sharp to notice, I've deleted the threads from the Admin Forum which only the moderators can see. The problem with deleting the threads is that it may have affected some post counts. I apologise for this, I'm sure no individual has lost more than 5 or 6 posts off their post counts and if you have, I'm afraid there's not much I can do about it. I deleted them to save space on the Admin Forum for the more important stuff (such as my continuous marriage proposals to Beagle Wink ).

Anyone with a problem with that, I'm sure you can make up your post count in the dozen or so elimination game threads currently running Razz

Omfg...lol!!!!!! Laughing
Robinflamingo

You mean all the posts I make at 4 AM that say "Blue carded!" don't count?

To steal from Quique...

*die*
Jordan

Robin, I do sincerely apologise. By all means go and post-whore in an elimination game on the boards somewhere. We all understand and forgive over such a matter. Wink

It really doesn't matter to me...I've always found post count to be a very silly thing to get upset about. But there ARE a few Duchess threads that need to be spammed, aren't there? Twisted Evil

Heehee!
Jordan

Guys, thanks for continuing to blue card and post one reply underneath to say it has been blue carded, it's been a real help to us moderators, keep up the good work and I love you all Very Happy
Jordan

Umm... Guys...?

Remember that thing we agreed on about one person blue carding one of those spambot posts and then posting underneath to say that it had been done?

Why did the one I just removed have 7 blue cards? Including more than one from the same person? (You know who you are!!!)

It may not get removed immediately because this site isn't moderated 24/7 but it will get dealt with d'oh!
jazzygirlsings

I think some of us see it at the same time and post at the same time...

Nah, this was over the course of an hour several people posted to the thread and like I said, one person blue carded it more than once. She knows who she is. Laughing

Hey you should just be thankfull that people are bluecarding the spammers. If a lot of people blue-carded something, and someone blue-carded more then once, they must have felt strongly. Be careful about talking down to the people who are trying to keep the board spam free. They are just trying to help. And adding a smiley face at the end doesn't make it all better regarding the way you talked to them.
Quique

I agree with Gayboy - people should only blue card once and leave a message that they did so.

Gayboy wasn't talking down to people at all. He's right, people get blue-card happy and swarm the mod's inboxes with a whole bunch of extra junk. The purpose of the blue-carding system is not to let the mods know how upset people are about something, it's to signal to them that something inappropriate had been posted and needs to be considered for removal.
Jordan

Quique is damn right. The unfortunate fact is that as moderators of the misc forum/social group, we get two emails per blue card.

I seriously only need to know once. Two emails is enough to spur me into action. I don't need a dozen. Thanks anyway those of you who feel the need to 'blue card' after another member has posted to say they've 'blue carded' but really, you're just wasting your time d'oh!

By all means, if it helps you sleep at night then carry on. Cool

For some reason I get four e-mails per report. We need to try the new anti-spam tool. I'll re-mail the admin.

So you suffer for my benefit hun? Am I bothered? Wink This lot don't care that I suffer twice per blue card and I visit the boards, do you want them to take an interest in the guy who appears on weird occasions on their board?

Anyhoo... We certainly do need to try a new anti-spam tool. It's beyond ridiculous the number of spammers we get, particularly Sunday-Mondays here.

If you could get Sally to have a look at the stuff in the 'Talk About The Forum Here' thread then all's well that ends well. Very Happy

I have been banning and deleting the spammers when I get to the reports first. (And they go into a filtered box, so there's really no reason to be bothered.)

But I'll write to her tonight.

Done.

And I'll slink off to Cats and continue to post in the occasional thread about musicals in Asia.

Even if they do feel "strongly," if they press the button once, the job will still get done. If you press it four times, the job will get done, but the Mods will be frustrated. Which one is the better choice? Keep in mind that the Mods are the ones who decide who stays and who goes. Cool

And I know, I know, I added a smiley face, I know, I know, it doesn't make anything better.
