Just a few questions

Okay I have a couple questions...

*Do you think the jr. version works okay for highschoolers or should it be strictly young kids? (My highschool is considering this show but more seriously considering the junior version because it's easier and much shorter in length).

*What are good ways to double up roles...I've heard cinderella's prince/wolf and narrator/mysterious man but are there others that work well in the jr. and full length show?

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

thanks,

Wolf/Steward is often done as an alternative. I've seen it and I don't have any problems with it, although I think the Wolf/Prince doubling is more effective.

I was in the Jr. version this year and it was ok for my Highschool but alot of the cast wanted to do the full version, and if you want you can go to www.broadwayjr.com and find out more about the Jr. version
the show is only about an 1hr. long and almost all the songs are shorter. also my book says that Cinderella's Mother and Granny can be played by the same person.
i played Jack's Mother and I had a blast, but I would have preferd to do the whole thing.
hope that helped!!!

Personally, I think if at all possible, avoid the jr. version. Also, if you're doing it with highschoolers, they're certainly mature enough to handle it. I'm currently doing it with a mostly high school group though we have a couple 7th or 8th graders. The show is hard yes, but it is most certainly doable. I think my cast would be really dissapointed if we did the jr. version. I know I would be.

Rapunzel's Prince/Mysterious Man
and
Cinderella's Father/Wolf

is very easy to pull off.

I'd recommend that you go for the full-length version if you can, absolutely. It's a great show and I think it could be pulled off by a high school, though it would certainly be difficult. But if you're sure that it would never work, I suppose the Jr. version would be a suitable alternative. The music is much simpler and as you said, it is much, much shorter. (Basically, all of Act II disappears). The only problem is it might seem a bit cheesy because the Jr. version takes out most of the darkness in Into the Woods, so it becomes very kid-oriented. I've been in the Jr. version twice with younger theater groups, and it gets a bit sappy for me at times. But of course, it'd be better to do the Jr. version of a great show than the full-length of a crappy one! Smile

well, i am at a theater camp for 2 weeks and in those 2 weeks we are performing the whole first act of the broadway into the woods.

if we can do it, you can do it! Very Happy
i have faith!

also, about the jr. version. i think that if you did the full version people in a way would almost be impressed, like "wow, they did a full stephen sondheim show! wow!" in a way as apose to "wow, they did alright. it was the jr. version"

whichever would be easier for your school. but i say go for the original.....

and also idk if you knew this but, the whole first act is a show in itself. you could even do just the first act if you wanted!

it's a thought =)

either way i know you'll have a fantastic show!

If they only did the first act, though, that's pretty similar to doing the Jr. version. I mean, they are very different, but the biggest disparity between the Jr. and full-length versions of ItW is that the Jr. version discludes the second act. Though I guess it'd be better to do the first act of the original show than to do the Jr. version.

If you're going to do just one act, do Act Two.

Agreed completely. My friends and I were hanging out yesterday and we decided to watch ITW... but we didn't have enough time to watch the whole thing, so we just watched Act II.

^^Ooh, good thinking. I agree; it would be much more interesting and rewarding to do Act Two, as long as it's okay with your director/producer/etc... See if they like that idea. Smile

The problem being that it's not okay with the publishers (MTI).

Ahh. Sorry; I'm tired. Of course, that's no excuse for me to be a doofus, but it's a bit of consolation for me.

Accidentally posted the same message twice... More proof of my exhaustion. Embarassed
