Josephina Gabrielle as LaureyWhat do you guys think of Josephina Gabrielle as Laurey in the London version of "Oklahoma!" (the one with Hugh Jackman)?
I just watched it, and I REALLY enjoyed her performance--some reviews said that she was "whiny," "cold," and didn't really "sparkle like Shirley Jones," but I thought she brought a natural, genuine, earthy quality to the role.
What does everyone else think?

Josephina was brilliant in the role. I saw her on broadway in he role and of course I own the London DVD.She is everyhing the role should be. Sassy,Smart,Witty,Tough, coy..and still feminine and pretty. Her scenes with jackman are electric and She and Shuler Hensley as Jud ..WOW! their big scene in ActII is one oft he great moments in 21st century musical theatre IMO.
No professional actress has come close to her splendid performance. She won a well deserved Olivier Award for it. Its a shame she wasnt nominated for a Tony.
Patrick Wilson got a nomination and he wasnt half as good as hugh Jackman in the role.

I like Josefina Gabrielle in other things, but she's clearly not a natural soprano and I find her voice so shrill and nasally in the role. She's a good actress, but I don't really care for her interpretation. Lovely dancer though.
Shirley Jones will always be my Laurey. She was just radiant in the role.

Shirley played the role like a sappy dresen doll. she was horrible.
and Josephina is far from nasal as Laurey. she adds so much to the role. her interpretation makes so much more sense than Jone's lackluster pining.

To each to their own I pretty much can't stand Jones as a person anymore (I mean, campaigning for Bush sr AND his son?? ) but I'll always love her Laurey.

I'm currently playing Laurey in my community theater's production of Oklahoma, and I've gotten so much inspiration from Josefina's performance. To me, she is absolutely the definitive Laurey. She gives her so much spunk, depth, and feeling. Shirley Jones' performance was flat in my opinion..and didn't show the range of Laurey's personality. And Josefina has such a beautiful voice too..I'm not sure why people seem to be so critical about it. She nailed it.

I had a teacher in my musical theatre history class in college that said Shirley Jones is the reason people hate musical theatre...LOL! It's because she doesn't act. Every "character" she plays is the same. (Her Julie in Carousel...BORING!) She has no journey or thought to her characters OR to her songs. She has a pretty voice, yes...but that doesn't make her a good Laurey. She doesn't take any risks with the character, nor does she make strong acting choices.
She's a singer...NOT an actor.
So if you didn't like Josephina's voice, that's one thing...The girl acts the HECK out of it! She's amazing! She makes Laurey a strong woman, while Shirley's interpretation is very weak, which doesn't work for any of the character's choices within the script. (Not sure if you have access to the script, but I would give it another read...It's worth it!)

She lacks strength in that character, but then again...that's a pretty bland character unless you really read into the subtext...so yeah...I guess that would be her "best" film...
And yes...Chenoweth was totally miscast in that...UGH!

actually Shirley's best film was "Elmer Gantry' with Burt Lancaster.
