Joseph Audition

Hi, I have an audition for Joseph in about 2 weeks. As much as I hate to say it, I don't know the show very well at all. I am 16 - a soprano but I can sing anything from belting to opera. What part should I be going for? The instruction was "prepare a song that shows off your range". Ideas? I don't really know what kind of style it is, or what kind of roles there are for me-type people, so any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks Very Happy

First off, I take It you mean Joseph and the Technicolored Dream Coat? Second off, lucky for you I've seen it and actually remember it. There weren't many female roles that I can remember. There was this one chick who was, well, pretty much a slut and slept with Joseph, so for that you could go with sleezy-sounding songs like, eh, "Hey Big Spender" or maybe even "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend." The narrator of the show, however, is a girl and she, to be honest, never shuts up. So you might wanna try out for her...she had a very good range..high pitched.. The two I mentioned before would be good. She needs a powerful voice, maybe even a bit of belting, so, maybe a song like ..hmm, to be honest, I don't know many, maybe, (as this is all I can think of) a song like Reflection from Mulan. Or just any song that tells a story, to show you can narrarate. I'll try to think of more!

The main female character is the narrator. She is usually cast a little older than 16 but she doesn't have to be. So if you think that you can vocally compete with older women then definitely go for it!!

For the narrator I agree that it should be a song that tells a story, sung not in your head voice but still with a sweet lovable tone- at the same time being able to belt a lot (because some of the parts of the shows she belts pretty high).

If you get a chance to listen to the cd- listen to the first song, and the Potiphar song when she does the whole "Letting out a mighty roar potiphar burst through the door!"

At the same time you have to have that very almost motherly-like "I'm going to tell you kids a story now" feeling.

Then there are two very small female parts (Potiphar's wife- the sleazy one) or there is a small soprano singing solo in "One More Angel in Heaven"...if you are a soprano this would be good for you. The girl is part of the ensemble but gets to sing a little too.

Other than that there are several women in the ensemble as well.

Hope this helped!!! Break a leg!! Very Happy

Thanks a lot, that's really helpful. I think I will try for the Narrator, but I am happy to be in the chorus or even in the band.

What do you think about "Vanilla Ice Cream" as an audition song?

not for the narrator

I think the best audtion song for the narrator would be the opening song from aida (name is escaping my mind at the moment). It shows soft and then goes all belty.

The song from Aida is called "Every Story is a Love Story."

You could also look at "The Story Goes On" from Baby.

Okay, I will have to try and find some sheet music for one of those songs. I also have to prepare a 1-2 minute mime and I am completely stuck for ideas!!! *grovels to kind MDN people again*...
