Johnny Depp, Alan Rickman and the rest of the movie cast.,

There is a thread on Helena Bonham Carter, but im curious to know what you all thought of Johnny Depp , Alan Rickman , Timothy spall, and of course the youngins...jayne wisner, jaime campbell bower and edward sanders...

Here are my thoughts....

Johnny Depp surprised me to be honest. When I first heard he was going to play Sweeney, I went..Um...er...I think not. I guess I didn't think he could sing it. But like i said i was pleasantly surprised. although some of his singing is like a rock star and a tad remaninsent of him as cry baby.

Alan Rickman did not surprise me, i suspected that he may be able to sing and handle the Judge's difficult lyrics and rythms due to his Shakespearean training. And I think with a little bit more vocal training if he wanted he could possilably play the Judge in the next revial.

Timothy Spall was good acting wise. But his singing is absolutely horrendous.

Sasha Baron Cohen was perfect for pirelli with all of his comedic timing. and he certainly surprised me with how well he could sing.

Jaime Campbell Bower was fabulous acting wise. and he managed There's no place like london, alright but i found her lacked to necessary power in Johanna.

Jayne Wisner, I felt did a very good job. With some more vocal training she could be very good. She sang Green Finch and Linnet Bird well enough for my taste, although she did not do the trill very well. (I doubt I could have done much better even with all vocal training ive had. My voice teacher and i havent gotten to voice trills yet.) and also there were parts in the song where she sounded to nasally.

Edward Sanders was the best singer. and i found a interesting casting choice to make Tobias a younger lad.

what do you think?

I loved them all, especially Johnny.

And he didn't sing in Cry Baby, he was dubbed.
GinnyWeasley201

how do you know that?
Brock07

It's fairly common knowledge.

I thought that Ed Sanders did an absolutely amazing job...his was one of my favorite portrayals of Toby. I found most of the others along the same lines as the op, however I actually liked the style that Depp used in his singing; no, it's not broadway, but it worked in my opinion. And, though this is completely conjecture, I suspect that Timothy Spall's lack of voice talent was a contributing factor in the cut of the Kiss Me Quartet (I can't imagine he could hit those high notes).

I saw the movie again last night and honestly I think Johnny was fabulous... Alan Rickman was perfect (I love him so much though) he played Judge Turpin so well! Timothy Spall...was good but he always had this weird look on his face that kept reminding me of Wormtail haha

Sasha Baron Cohen rocked my socks. He was definitely one of the highlights...just the way he moved was perfect!

I actually cried a little bit this time when Mrs. Lovett leaves Toby in the bake house...it got to me more than it did the first time I saw it and I'm not sure why.

Also, BOO YAH GILES! Love that he has one line in the whole damn movie. I love Anthony Stewart Head haha

Timothy Spall's singing was NOT HORRENDOUS!!! he has one of the only trained singing voices in the whole cast! He was doinbg a f* cking character voice for god's sake!
go listen to his work in Topsy-Turvy!!

I am so sick of pepole not knowingt he difference between acting a song and just singinging it!

You weren't bothered by the fact that Ed Sanders had the same expression on his face the entire movie?
Brock07

I agree Salome. Here's a huge difference, and alot of people don't understand that (even around here).

And sure, Ed could have used a little more facial expression, but overall I thought it really worked the way it is. It hit me emotionally, which is what mattered most to me.

I liked the part when Spall was singing...I was mad that they cut out all of his song..but I suppose they needed to get the point across and the intro and outro to the song sum it up pretty nicely..

I agree, like I said, I cried when he sings Not While I'm Around and when Lovett locks him away...

I would have cut the exact same part if I directed the show.

Ed was chilling in the final scene. No words at all. Just one pissed off mini-sweeney
Brock07

I didn't really care that Ladies was drastically cut....it's pretty much my least favorite song in the show.

What was he?
Snow_White

He came in after The Contest and walked up to Sweeney and said something like "Mr. Todd I will be visiting your shop soon"...

Give him the Golden Globe damnit Wink

itso ne of my favorites. I wish they got rid of Not WHile I'm Around.
Brock07

How come? Do you not like the song in general, or did you just hate Ed's performance of it?

Hah! I knew that was Anthony Head...I was like "wtf is he doing in this movie?
Brother Marvin Hinten, S.

**SPOILER OF SCREENPLAY DRAFT ALERT**

That bit actually looks to be the last remnant of the cut Sweeney ghosts, of which Head was one. They were all ex-customers of Sweeney's, doubling as his conscience, who were seen both as ghosts and as their real selves throughout the movie. It would be intriguing to check out the other customers throughout the film and see if they match the script.
Salome

I'm not a fan of the song in general i feel it slows down the action as well.
Brock07

I gotcha....I agree that it slows the action a bit, but I am in love with the characterization that goes on there.

Just as a followup...I saw the movie a second time yesterday and after reading this specifically watched his face. While he holds a similar expression throughout most of the movie, he definitely shows emotion, though mostly through his eyes. However, the constant expression seems to work for me...after all he has lived a fairly awful life, first in the London workhouses and then with the abusive Pirelli; it would make sense that a melancholy expression was etched into his features.

Yes!!! I hadn't realized it was the same actor that played the originator of the title role in The Mikado until I looked him up on IMDB. Then I was 100 times more impressed with his performance. It takes a truly talented performer to be able (and willing) to hide a stunning vocal instrument under a creepy character voice. Not to mention the fact that I'll bet he has the right type of classical training to be able to do character singing without damaging his voice.
