Johanna..is being blonde a must?

I'm a brunette...and would love to lay johanna...but is being blond a must?....there are always wigs right?..anyway I'm wondering if being a brunette would hinder my chances..or if the directors would be able to see past hair color and look into the possibility of using a wig? I know there are references to "yellow hair"

As you say Thats what wigs are for. Johanna is a difercult enough part without having to fret about hair colour. Yes she needs to be blond as thats the reason Ant go to Foggs as a wig maker looking for a certain shade of blond. Go for it it's a great part in a great show.

Many Johannas have been brunettes with wigs! Lisa Vroman is the first one that comes to mind for me.

Actually in a recent production in L.A., the cast was all asian and in order to not put a blond wig on their Johanna, they changed the lyrics to "buried sweetly in your raven hair." Very Happy

Out of curiousity, did they also change the little exchange between Anthony and Sweeney when Sweeney is explaining different shades of hair color to Anthony so he can rescue Johanna from the asylum?

I saw that production (it was VERY good). Anyways, they cut the number.

I think they contacted SJS in person and asked him to rewrite the lyrics appropriately.

That's what I heard.

I'd LOVE to play Johanna as well, it fits my voice like a glove--but my hair is dark brown as well!

Honestly, if you look fairly normal in a blond wig and then get a good one, I can't see why they'd be opposed. Although changing yellow to raven is clever, it doesn't have the same effect. Yellow is such a plain word and is not very descriptive (as Sweeney proves in the wigmaker sequence). Raven, on the other hand, is WAAAAAY more descriptive than black because it makes you picture a raven and its deep, dark black feathers. Raven could have further implications. This could make Johanna seem vicious or dirty or even bad luck. Therefore, I think the idea of changing the color would work better if one could find a less descriptive word for black... or brown... or red.
