I have no experience in the 'industry' in any way, so - Why don't people audition by singing a song from the part they are going for? It seems most appropriate.

Generally speaking, most directors don't want to hear you sing a song from the show. And also, the music in this show is really hard to sing and it would be really hard for the accompanist to sight read if he/she hadn't previously rehearsed.
My accompanist for my NOCCA audition had a hard time sight reading Marry Me A Little from Company. And he's a really good sight reader.

I am also auditioning for Sweeney Todd soon and i cant figure out what song to audition with, i just want to audition for chorus because I am too young to be Ms. Lovette and I am only a mezzo sop. so i cant sing Johanna's part
any suggestions?
