Jesus AuditionsHowdy folks, lemme lay down the scoop before I lay down my question.
I've done Godspell twice already; once as John/Judas, and once as a male soloist singing the rock-n-roll Lacamoire arr. of Learn Your Lessons. I love the show, I know the show inside out, and in a word, I'm a Spellaholic.
In my Senior year now, my school is ironically doing Godspell (with the Nat'l Tour, Rock-N-Roll Lacamoire arrangements), and I figure "Why not? I'm gonna shoot for the stars."
A little about me: I'm versatile singer, being able to hit notes well into the mid-Bass range, but I'm at home in the tenor octaves and can belt well out to a Bb, and my falsetto even higher.
I'm well versed in musical theater, and I know a great many shows and songs.
Now, the question:
My problem: what song to use to audition for a rock-and-roll Jesus in the Lacamoire style, without singing a song from the show or from JCS (I just wanted to make sure that one was pre-struck down).
Thank you all.

If it was the traditional style Godspell, I would suggest a song from Pippin. I don't think Jesus' songs are changed too much in the new version so I think you would be fine with something like "Corner of the Sky" or "Magic to Do".

Nooo, never use RENT for an audition. As much as I LOVE the show,
I've been told multiple times, not to use it.
In my opinion, never use something from a really current show for an audition.

Never, Ever, Ever do any songs from the following shows for auditions.
Rent
Wicked
Les Miserables
Phantom of the Opera
Cats (in particular, Memory--I know directors that will hear the first bar, and stop you and say...Thank You that is all.)
Maybe pretty much all Andrew Lloyd Webber Stuff--except the obscure shows--such as, Whistle Down the Wind.
If you want a "rock" type show...do something from Chess.
"Pity the Child" is a very hard hitting song, and if you can sing it...and sing it well... I am sure you will get a part no matter what.

Alright, alright, settle folks. I know the "What NOT to use-s", I've been around the game long enough, but unfortunately the few male tenor angeneu roles I've had were mainly skivved by luck - I've been pegged as a character actor for a loooong time. This one I'm trying to focus on as the leading tenor, rock-n-roll style or not.
So, yes, no rent - I would never audition for a show with RENT unless I was down on my luck in NYC and need a job and RENT was casting. Then I'd use RENT.
I know no Les Mis & Phant - both too operatic.
But however, I emphatically disagree with not using Wicked, especially for Schwartz/Lacamoire auditions. In fact, I think it's mighty appropriate to use for this - contemporary, up-tempo, and very in-style for this audition. In fact, I've recommended to several people for use in this audition.
,
And if you say it's bad luck or bad practice - I nailed my last production of Godspell and a stint as 'Leading Player' using 'Dancing through Life.'
Anywho, I'm going to do "Corner of the Sky." Tuesday is the singin' auditions, so wish me luck!

Thats lucky for you, but it is still not ever a good idea to use Wicked songs for an audition. Its popularity makes it extremely over-done, and most of the songs like Defying Gravity, No Good Deed, and The Wizard and I, are just way to hard for most people, and are usually done poorly. It also makes it look like you don't have a lot of experience in researching songs for you audition, because almost any random person from off the street could say they have heard of Wicked, and "oMG! I luv it!" But how many of them have heard of shows like Pippin, Chess, or Side Show? All those shows and many more have just as good audition songs, but it just might take a bit more work getting the music and learning what they are about.
That being said, "Corner of the Sky" was a great choice. Best of luck on your audition!

I think it's also different between a female doing a Wicked song and a male. I haven't heard of many male auditions using Wonderful or Dancing Through Life but I have heard way too many female auditions for just about every female song in the show that can be made into an audition song. I know that I try to avoid ever using any of the songs. Plus, I just don't think the styles are close enough. That being said, I think "Corner of the Sky" is a good choice. Schwartz has so many other shows that have good audition material in them, it's just poor judgement to only focus on Wicked.
