Jelly & GusMkay I'm in a teen production of CATS right now, as Jellylorum. It's quite fabulous actually, because the company I'm part of is basically apprentices to the professional cast at the theatre I work at, so we get an amazing set and really fabulously detailed costumes. We've got amazing kids from all over New England, so hopefully our talent will be worthy of them. I'll post loads of pics I promise.
Anyways, Gus and I have worked our song through a few times now, and we definately have the storytelling bit down. My one question though is, what is the actual relationship between Gus and Jelly? Is she his mate or daughter, or something else? If it isn't actually stated anywhere, what do you think it is?
The generations get a bit confused because Jelly is older then most of the cats but not quite as ancient as Gus...
thanks =]

There is some debate over that, it depends on what you think/preffer. I think it would also depend on Jellylorum. In some productions she's been portrayed as younger than in the video.
But it sounds like you're going with the older version. I'd say in that case their mates. That was my impression when I saw the Tour come by my town, it was really sweet. (Jellylorum started encouraging the audience to clap for him, and I was like "aaaaw! That's so cute!)
So for this production, mates.

In most versions Jellylorum is portrayed as Gus' loving daughter/caretaker.

I was told by a former CATS performer that Jellylorum was Gus' nurse/caretaker and was not related to him in any way. In the US version, Jellylorum is a little older than Bombalurina. In the UK and some other european productions, she is older. I think it's up to you, Gus' performer, and your director as to how you want to portray the two.

Neat!
which performer?

I always figured that she was his granddaughter. After all, she's the one who listens to his stories about the old days whilst everyone else ignores him.

You know, now that the possibility of that (caretaker) comes to mind, I'd go with that. Neither of the previous two options really seemed right to me...
Good luck with your production!

It's been a few years, I'm not sure if I remember correctly. It was a first cast member I had talked to....possibly Dave Blonn.
I also remember reading an interview with a London performer who had said that she played Jellylorum as one who was in charge or helped with wardrobe in the theatre where Gus had performed. And that Jellylorum deeply respected and took care of Gus.

Was this a sarcastic statement? I really can't tell. Re-reading my post I do sound boastful, so I apologize if that was the intentions of this comment. On the other hand, if it was sincere then it's nice to meet you too =P
lol, someone help me out here...

It's not sarcastic, littlgriz is very friendly.
No worries. (She's congradulating you on being in a performance of Cats.)

I prefer the "caretaker of no blood relation" relationship. Jelly in the theater business doesn't work for me, but I could see her perhaps as a fan of his work who started out having a sort of mentor-friendship with him, that turned into her taking care of him as he got older.

MrsJem,
I agree. I don't see them as mates at all either.
Some people match up Jellylorum and 'Asparagus Jr' indicating that there is a younger and an older 'Gus'. I don't think there is a 'younger' Gus. I believe this is because there was an 'Asparagus' in the video. But that was only because John Mills couldn't dance the part. That's the only production that I'm aware of that has both and Asparagus and a Gus.

In our show we have Gus and Asparagus played by the same person. I beleive he's playing them as completely separate characters.

Well, technically, "Aspargus" is just Gus's chorus cat. Griz, Deut, Tugger, Mungo, Rumpel, Misto, Skimble, and Gus (did I miss anyone?) all have chorus cat costumes which they either stay in the whole show except for their song, or they are in the chorus outfit only until their song comes on and then they stay in their song costume until the end of the show. I can understand playing 'Asparagus' as a different character since 'Asparagus' does some dancing, and 'Gus' is too old to do the dancing. Mind you, I'm just talking more about the US Tour and Broadway productions (probably other productions, too). As I said earlier, each production does things to their own liking. This makes each production more original. If your Gus player wants to play Asparagus as it's own character then that's his perogative.
