Jellicle Ball- choreography section names?

My lovely sister is handing in her essay on Gillian Lynne on monday morning, so saturday evening she's researching thre Jellicle Ball. Shame it's due Monday, Drew Varley teaches her wednesdays.... Rolling Eyes

Can someone with a better memory than I give us the information about the names of the sections of the ball? I know it's been discussed here in the past, but I don't think it was particularly recent past...
Spanish_Rumple

What do you mean about the sections? Are you talking about the Invitation to the Ball lyrics? The ball itself is just dance, does it have sections?

Your sister is luky to have Drew as teacher... you don't know how much I envy her (it's sane and non harmful, don't worry hehehe) I really like his mungojerrie and his accent.

I'm pretty sure she's talking about the individual sections of dance with a song. For example, we could call the part of the Jellicle Ball song when the Cats are in a triangle dancing to that slow music with Victoria in the fron a section. Unfortunately, I don't know the section names. I do remember that when we had the trivia thread some of the names were mentioned, but I can't for the life of me remember what they were...
The Drama Queen

Yes, in the vocal score of the Jellicle Ball the end of it is of course, marked only by rest marks, which are seperated into groups of about 16 beats and each section does have a different name. I think I can remember some like "Boys Cartwheel" and "Whirlygigs", and I also think Tugger and Bomba had ones named after them. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Well, the way I see it, it can be broken down into 3 big sections (from where they stop singing) - the first jazz section, the ballet section, then the second jazz section. I don't know the names that The Drama Queen mentioned, but it seems that the first section seems to be based on the theme is based on the recurring cadence we hear in the Overture and the "Invitation to the Jellicle Ball", etc., which becomes an "Old Deuteronomy" -themed ballet section, which becomes a jazzy, "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats" theme.

Thats the way I see it. Smile

I know that one section is called 'The Princess Louise' as Gillian Lynne talks about it on the extended DVD, so called because she made it up whilst stuck in traffic outside the pub of that name during rehearsals for the original London production. I believe it's the fast section (in the video anyway) towards the end, with Tugger in the fore of the shot, followed by jemima. Sorry I can't explain it any better than that, but good luck with the essay anyway!

Good thing I saved this.

Here's a list of the sections of the Ball (or, at least, our version -
some of the stuff GHAACats05 is posting seems different to me) :

Signature: From the super-slow "Jellicle Cats come out tonight..." to
after the group has split into four sections and come back together in
the center of the stage
Minuet (not in the video): When everyone partners up and does.. well,
what looks like a minuet.
British Airways: Where it looks like they're following a plane until
they run off and Misto takes over the stage
Feud: Exactly what it sounds like. The Misto-Alonzo-Pouncival fight.
Section lasts until Bombalurina takes the stage for...
Honkytonk: To the honky-tonk sounding music, haha.
Ballet Boys/Spikey Ballet: Starts right at the change in music, where
the melody is to Old Deuteronamy with the little.. things in-between
the phrases. Ballet Boys is the boys up front dancing, Spikey Ballet
is the group of girls in the background dancing.
Whirligigs: Follows directly after Spikey Ballet. When everyone starts
whirling around like a top and stuff. :/
Wheat Fields: What's going on in the background while Victoria does
her small solo downstage, still during the Deuteronamy music.
Sensuals: As Smudge lovingly put it, the "kitty orgy". I think this
has a pretty obvious ending spot; where the music stops.
Pop-ups: The heads popping up right after Sensuals
Jutters: Augh, this is where it gets hard to describle .0. The section
right before Copland. Pretty much everyone is doing something
different.
Copland: Where everyone does the big hand poppy... thing. Where
everyone comes together after the big mess that's called Jutters.
Big Boys: After the 'jete' section of Copland, where a group of boys
come downstage and... dance. I don't know how many it is usually, but
it was three for us.
Girls Upstage: The girls upstage who do the thigh-slapping... thing.
Coming downstage. Overlaps Big Boys.
Buildup (half of this section cut from tape): the girls in Girls
Upstage do a nifty combination before what's REALLY the 'buildup',
which is where everyone gradually joins in with the girls that were
upstage.
Tuggers Boys: Still on the 'buildup' music, When Tugger and his lovely
group of male followers take over the stage.
Hovers: The section that I think is fun to do, when everyone bobs
their knees from side to side.
Princess Louise: Crazy crazy crazy. The super-fast
omgi'mgoingtopassout section. I'm sure you know what I'm talking
about.
Warsaw: The finale. Starts with the drastic music change, to the
show's signature tune.
Smudge

Yay for Pounce! I was driving myself a little nuts trying to remember all those sections as I read through this thread!
Bombateazer

When I learned the Jellicle Ball dance (Gary Watson was the instructor)we were told that Jutters can often be called Judders too - because of the "juddery" effect. I clearly remember that Copland, Hovers (kinda looks like your hovering at the start lol!) Warsaw, ohmigodimgonnapassout and big boys...yes big boys is very much stuck in my memory after the explanation Gary gave with it Shocked
Flitterbug

What was the explanation?
Bombateazer

Im not sure its...suitable...for this board hehe! Among many other things he said to make sure we danced correctly...
If you really want to know I'll PM you
Flitterbug

Please do. ^_^ I'd like to know.
