jazzing up Learn your Lessons WellHi,
I'm new to the Forum but not new to Godspell--I was last in it in 1977 (!) when I was Robin. In my current production the director is "tweaking" things a bit--I was cast as Joanne but at the first rehearsal was told that I seem to be singing Gilmer's songs. I'm a little disappointed as "Learn your Lessons well" was never my favorite and I was REALLY excited at singing O Bless the Lord My Soul. So, does anyone have any suggestions or links about how to jazz up Learn your lessons well and make it more exciting?
Thanks! Sharon

Check out the 2000 off-Broadway cast recording, the 2001 tour cast recording, and the Jr. recording as well! All three are VERY spiced up and awesome! How high can you belt? The 2000 off-broadway version goes up to a belted G, but I think the others only go to an Eb or so. Either way, all three are brilliant!

I did that song in a Godspell show... the show itself was the worst experience of my life... however...
When I did it I really jazzed up the "not to mention any threat of hell" with a retardando/belt/vibrato especially hitting hell crisp. Then follow by doing a nice jazzy "Well" for eight strong beats and STRIKE A POSE (see the Hitler pose in "Spring Time For Hitler" in The Producers when he first comes on")
or something like that...
The song is not vocally flexable and you'll have all the chance in the world to be jazzy during "O Bless the Lord," but this song can be a test of your ability to make an "okay" song memorable in the show.
