jazz classic

okay, so I'm not really sure if this belongs on this forum... but I could really use some help.

I got selected for a scholarship offered by a local community chorus. I'm supposed to perform a song at their final concert in May and the theme is old jazz classics. I am a HUGE fan of ella fitzgerald and I've been thinking about Cheek to Cheek, Summertime, Someone to Watch Over Me, or something similar to those. I have a very flexible range, but I love singing the really deep alto songs that I can really belt out. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would like to know your personal favorites because I want to perform something that the audience can appreciate and enjoy. Please tell me your opinions on some of the ideas I've come up with and add any other suggestions. Thank you so much!

I love "Skylark"--don't know what key it's in, but it's in that same vein. k d lang did a gorgeous version of it that can be downloaded, if you're lucky, but there are lots of versions around...

hey thanks! that's actually one of my personal favorites as well, but it never came to mind for some reason. I'll definently think about that one

Some really nice songs----

The Man I Love- performed by Billie Holiday (I'm currently working on this one....and it's really jazzy and gorgeous, but sorta repeats itself.)

I'll Be Seeing You- performed by Bing Crosby

I'll Get By [As Long As I Have You] - I'm not sure who performs it, but it was written by Roy Turk and Fred E. Ahlert. It's really fun to sing.

Love Letters - it's a really expressive song, and it stays in alto range.

Seems Like Old Times- This song has a moderate tempo and a pretty simple melody.

Also, look at old jazz standard artists like Doris Day, Billie Holiday, The Andrew Sisters, Rosemary Clooney, Ruth Etting, and Judy Garland.

I've never heard of a few of those, but I looked them up and those are some really good suggestions

"I'll Be Seeing You" is definently one of the best jazz standards out there and although I had never heard of "Love Letter" or "The Man I Love" I really enjoyed both of those. So thanks for the ideas! There are just so many great classics out there that it's so difficult to choose just one. I guess that's a good problem to have though.....

Your welcome! Good Luck!

any opinions on the song "the nearness of you"? It was recorded by norah jones

That's would be a really good song to do! It has a pretty good range to it.
The lyrics are beautiful. I'm not familiar w/ Norah's version of it, but she does the jazz/blues/pop thing well.
