Jason Robert BrownJust thought I'd start off this forum with something thats you know...not wicked. So what's everyones take on this guy? He's actually one of my favorite composers and I look greatly forward to hearing whatever it is he will do next. Does anyone know if he's done anything (that I could get a recording of) other than Songs for a New World, The last 5 years and parade? I adore the latter two, and just got SfaNW and really like that too. I think it has to do with him combining the sort of jazz piano influence with musical theatre singing and such so well. Its like Schwartz without the horror somehow. I honestly don't hate schwartz as much as others, but really thats what Brown seems like, Schwartzes style (well, more jazzy than pop) done better. I'm not sure which of the two I'm really familiar with I like more, as I like them for really different reasons. I think the Last 5 Years has the best music on its own of any other musical I can think of right now. If someone tells me they want to get into musicals, and I dont want to risk having them hear sondheim, I lure them in with some songs from the Last 5 Years. On the otherhand Parade is a masterpiece. The story line is so touching, and the music really adds to it. However, it has less of a concentrated awesomeness just going by recording, as more of the songs are needed to push plot along. ~The Lone Wanderer |

Yes, L5Y is a good one. Although, it's too bad that it's only a cast of 2 (but I guess it wouldn't have worked with anyone else). Jason Robert Brown wrote a few songs in a lesser-known musical called Urban Cowboy. I have not seen the musical, but I have seen the movie which it is based on (starring John Travolta).
What is your favorite song from Last Five Years, LoneWanderer? |

I love Parade, I think SfaNW is OK, and I LOATHE L5Y. Parade is amazing though.

Thats a toughy. When I first listened to it I liked the upbeat songs the most, mainly Shiksa Goddess and Moving too Fast. I also love the story of schmuel, though only because the Nanas make me so happy for some reason. As time went on I liked the sadder songs more and more. Right now I would say Goodbye Until Tomorrow/I could never rescue you, its somewhat upbeatish...yet so sad because you know everythings going to go horribly in the end. ~The Lone Wanderer |

I absolutely love Parade - the music is brilliant.
TL5Y is okay, but I guess I just tend to like bigger cast musicals. I haven't gotten the chance to hear anything from Songs for a New World...soon, though I hope to hear it. |

Nobody Needs to Know is my favorite from L5Y.

Jason Robert Brown
I think that Jason Robert Brown writes some amazing stuff. He has an uncanny ability to tell stories through songs and his arrangements are just amazing. I would love to see him apply his skills more often in the context of a narrative/book musical like Parade or The Last Five Years as opposed to writing individual songs. I have a special like for this latter show, in that it offers a new twist on the archetypal marriage musical, I Do, I Do.
You could check out his new-ish solo album, Wearing Someone Else's Clothes. Later days David |

Ah I love Jason Robert Brown's music. I too wish he would do more musicals. I thought someone posted that he had two in the works? Eh.
My favorite song from L5Y is "Summer In Ohio" followed by "A Miracle Would Happen." From Parade...Ahhh either "All The Wasted Time" or "Pretty Music." There are also some pieces of music that I just love...like "Trial: People of Atlanta" and "Where Will You Stand When The Flood Comes?" And from SFaNW, I really like "Stars and the Moon" and "I'd Give It All For You." "Just One Step" is pretty fun too. Parade's my favorite. |

We did Parade last year in my high school, and it definitely became one of my favorite musicals. I think as a cast, our favorite number was either All the Wasted Time, or the Trial Sequence. |

Re: Jason Robert Brown
Mmm..I loved Someone Else's Clothes when I heard it. My fav non-musical album that i've heard this year, possibly excepting Songs For Silverman. Really great if you like JRB with a passion. (As I do) And that is really cool that your HS did Parade. I'd love it if they did it at mine next year or summat--Playing Trombone in the pit orchestra would be for the win |

I am currently in Parade and I am in love with the story and all the music. It is great!

I've seen SfaNW twice, I think some songs were good and others were dry and boring.
But my director saw him in concert a while ago, and he says he is insane on the keyboard. |

Ohmywow... Jason Robert Brown... *floats*
I remember the day I got my L5Y recording--- I was in tears by the time I finished listening to it... And still, whenever I listen to ''The Next Ten Minutes'' and ''Nobody Needs To Know'' I cry. (What sucks is that the local theatre community I just recently became involved w/ did L5Y last year, and I missed it.) |

Parade is flipping brilliant and I have no idea how it got panned. The whole show is just so memorable. I relished every single moment of that show.
| ekrueger24 |
ours wasn't pannedOur recent production of "Parade" wasn't panned, there are talks of it being the best show in Vegas this season (which is almost over). It is a phenominal show and has a message that needs to be mentioned. I included links to the reviews if any of you are interested in hearing what the critics had to say...Las Vegas Weekly: http://www.lasvegasweekly.com/2006/04/06/stage1.html Las Vegas CityLife: http://www.lasvegascitylife.com/articles/2006/04/06/theater_and_dance/stage.txt Las Vegas Review Journal: http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2006/Apr-07-Fri-2006/weekly/6711645.html Unfortunatly, the main review for the Review-Journal is no longer on-line, but Mr. Del Valle gave the show an "A", but mentions that "We're not used to seeing characters so likable being so bigoted.....The entire cast is remarkable...leavs you in an appropriatelty troubled state of mind." |

His music has a lot of beauty in it that somehow, amidst the character and storyline, goes missing in other musicals. Not only that, he writes so intelligently that I just revel in his music. I put L5Y on at work today and I had customers coming up asking me who the singers were. (I would so turn for Sherie Rene Scott.)
Pick from Last Five Years- The Next Ten Minutes, Goodbye Until Tomorrow, Climbing Uphill Pick from Parade- (What else?) Hard to Speak My Heart. (Nyom, nyom, nyom nyom nyom.) |

his solo album is wonderful. "someone to fall back on" is one of the best songs he's written (out of context)

JRB = Genius.
I LOVE Parade, I LOVE L5Y, but i can't really get into SFANW yet. I mean, songs like Stars and the Moon and River Won't Flow are great and everything, but when i first heard Parade for example, I immediately loved it, I'm not getting the same thing with SFANW?? Oh well. Someone Else's Clothes is goooood too. |
