Jane Eyre the Musical

Alright a theater company I have worked for before is doing "Jane Eyre the Musical" and the director asked me to audition for Jane and Blanche Ingram. The premise of the show seems somewhat lame (only because I hated the book...). I'm really more of a comedic charactor actress and I'm not all that fond of long boring musicals which is what it seems like from what I've heard. It sounds kind of like a bad knock off of the secret garden, les mis, and jekyll and hyde. It's really hard to find information on. Has anyone been in it or seen it? Does neat staging and sets make up for lame boring music??? I'm trying to deside if I really want to be involved in this for a 12 week run plus all the rehearsal time. Anyone know anything about it?

I'm biased. I love the book. I love the musical (though I only have heard the OST.)

The plot is VERY condensed from the book and they do remove a lot of the weirder plot elements. I love how they changed it from some unknown uncle to Jane's aunt who's left her the inheritance.

It's got some comedic moments; tottering Mrs. Fairfax and the Gypsy.

It's not a Les Mis knock off. I haven't heard enough of the Secret Garden to know how it compares.

Do you have anything better to do?

The Secret Garden is 10x better in my opinion, and they don't sound much the same. But no it isn't a Les Mis knockoff.

Jane Eyre has a nice score, although it may be best enjoyed if you're not familiar with The Secret Garden.

It could be retitled Beautiful Melodies Cut from The Secret Garden.

Wait a minute, I don't understand what you mean about Jane Eyre being a rip off of The Secret Garden. It is not at all that. Jane Eyre has its own style and is not a copy of The Secret Garden.
However, I think if you don't like the musical, don't audition for it. Why don't you audition for the comedy character Mrs. Fairfax. They could make you look old, and you could wear a wig, but really, if you don't like the musical, DON'T AUDITION! It is very simple.

That opinion differs from yours. That's all you need to understand.

Secret Garden is a childrens book..Jane Eyre is one of the greatest works of Literature ever written. there is no contest.

I have avoided the musical because I love the book so much ..I dont want to see it turned into another crap show like Jeykll and Hyde or Dracula.

Well its a professional production so they are casting age appropriate and I'm waaaay too young to be playing Mrs. Fairfax. And I didn't mean plotwise I meant the music sounds really similar to the secret garden. I could audition for other things but I'm sorta garenteed a part in this show whereas if I'm just out auditioning theres no garentees (though I'm auditioning for Urinetown next week and if by some slim chance I get into that I won't be auditioning for Jane Eyre) and I would rather be working in a show I don't like than in no show at all...I guess I'd prefer to play Blanche because although its a smaller part she has some comedy about her and its fun to play those kind of parts. But I dunno maybe I should go for Jane. Actually, maybe the company should have picked a better show, then I'd be happy Very Happy

..or maybe you should try to actually work on your acting instead of falling back on comedic roles to carry you through dramatic plays.

yes..that sounded bitchy. but i'm a blunt girl.

I'm not sure about anybody else, but I was referring solely to the score.

Whoa whoa whoa...I'm just looking for advice on a show here you don't need to get uppity about it you don't even know me... I said I PREFER comedic roles in comedic shows. Not I can ONLY do comedy. I've been in professional productions of the Crucible (abby), The Glass Menagerie(laura), Romeo and Juliet(Juliet), Our Town(Emily), and many more which means I am good enough at dramatic acting that I can get cast and paid for it. Also, as I said, the director asked me to do this show as in she wants me to do it so I must be somewhat decent at it, yes? Its just a matter of personal prefrence and I happen to prefer comedy. Its a good company and I don't want to go back to working in shows that pay me $25 bucks a show so I have to start watching other people's kids again hehe.

So let me rephrase my question. Is the show good enough to stick around and do it or should I not do it even though I may or may not be able to find other work right now?? (this is the main way I make my living)

I love the book. It is fabulous. I also love the music. I have never seen the show staged, but I heard terrible things about it. I am contented to re-read the book and listen to the CD. That being said, I don't think that the show would be a terrible thing to be involved in. I have been involved in shows that were far less appealing than Jane Eyre, and I always have found some positive aspect of the production to distract myself with.

I think you would enjoy Urinetown much more, from the sounds of things.
DRAMADORK

i did not bother to read through all of that, but i performed in jane eyer a couple years ago when i was 14.
It was excellent, there are many differences in the book and the musical. It sounds odd that its a musical but its done very well and the music is beautiful. I played Jhn Reed( in the musical they combine all of Jane's cousins into one child- John) i was also double cast as lord ingram, as most of the cast is. It was excellent and so much can be done with it. The most difficult vocal/acting roles are Jane and Helen- but those characters if done right- WOW. Blanche can be very very fun, but careful- she has 2 songs and in some versions one of them is cut- her funny one.
