Jane Eyre-a good musical?

I was barely 5 or 6 when the show came out, or at least came to Toronto, so my only experiences of it were the Youtube clips I saw. The bits and pieces I heard were pretty, although it is odd to experience the musicalization of a novel I studied and English calss (I was one of the very very few who enjoyed the novel, among my friends at least.)

Anyway, I was just wondering if it was successful at all in it's time and if it was any good.

note: I just looked it up anhd discovered it was nominated for the 2000 Tony for best musical of all things, so I gues that's saying something.

It was not a success..plus I love the book so much that the i find the mnusical doesnt really capture thye feel and mood of the novel.

some of the music is good, but you have to pick and choose. The reviews on Amazon are fairly correct, some say all the songs start to sound alike after a while. Somewhat true. A song that is #5 or 6 or something on the CD (out of 20 something) sounds like an Act 1 Finale kind of song.... and then half the songs after it sound like finale songs too.
I like "Painting Her Portrait" and "The Finer Things" (sing by Jane and Blanche, respectively)
I've never seen it, but enjoy listening to select songs on the CD.

the only song in the show I like is sirens. That's the reason I bought the cd actually (assuming that would like the other songs too) , but the rest of the show is boring and as said, all starts to sound the same

fuzzy

It kind of loses itself, with the end of one song sounding like the beginning of the next. You're best off reading the book and listening to a few selected tracks.

Like many shows, it was better before it went to Broadway...

I hate the novel. As such, I don't have any intrest in seeing the show but to perhaps make remarks to the person next to me...when we watched the film there were numerous times that we all started laughing hysterically. I read the book at the end of 2006 and I absolutly dispised it.

well, these responses weren't very cheery...oh well, I'll always have Timothy Dalton Mr. Green

P.S. SweeneyHyde, out of curiousity why did you hate the book so much?

I've never seen the show but love most of the songs on the CD. Both of Mrs. Fairfax's songs I rather despise, but I'm in love with the main "Sweet Liberty" theme. Of course, the plot is good, and I've seen a movie of it in addition to reading the original novel, but I can't really say whether or not the show sticks to the book, having never seen it performed. I would definitely recommend it if you like the sort of "haunting" scores.

If you were sitting next to me at any show and did that, you'd find your head wedged permanently between the chair's seat and backrest. I've had too many shows spoiled by someone who thinks they ought to carry on a running commentary with their companion. I don't care if you like it or not, save the remarks for after.

As for "Jane Eyre," I love the book and a couple of the film adaptations. I find the musical to be uneven (based on the recordings...I never had a chance to see it). A lot of the songs seemed to drag, though I did like some of them.

I love farewell good angel and the gypsy song. other than that all the other songs seem to lack energy, except maybe the proposal and sirens.

I did it this past fall at my high school - it was a much better show than I expected, but still not a 'great' show. We were lucky to find a boy who could sing Rochester's part - if we hadn't, it would've been pretty disastrous. It was strange, though, because the cast recording doesn't have a lot of the songs from the show, including all of my favorite songs.

Timothy Dalton was good..but Orson Welles as Rochester and Jaon Fontaine as Jane are even better.

there is also an earlier version that isnt as complete but Colin CLive (Dr. Frankenstien from the origial 1931 film) is a splendid Rochester.

I love this show. I was in it my junior year of highschool...now four years later I'm doing, I'm doing it as a junior in College. Playing Richar Mason both times...but I also got cast as John Reed too in the college production. The CD is amazing, imo. Although I wish all the songs were on there...like "The Scream" and "Oh How You Look In The Light". But I love this show, and I think it's amazing!

I never saw it on Broadway, but I put yes on there....cause i've been in it!
