Jack's Mom audition advice.

My fall play for drama just ended, and for our spring play we're doing Into the Woods. I just watched the whole movie on youtube last night and I love it! I really can't wait to be part of this production, but there's one thing. I want to have a role, with lines. For every show, I've been in the ensemble, and while watching the movie, I realized that there were hardly any ensemble parts at all! So I watched the movie and completely fell in love with the character of Jack's mom and I'd really like to be her.

My audition is December 2nd which is right after our Thanksgiving break, and I'll probably be practicing my song selection all week. For our auditions we have to sing a whole song from a musical, but I'm undecided of what I want to sing yet, but I don't want to rush into a song like I did last year for Beauty and the Beast.

I don't know what to sing. I want to sing something Jack's mom-ish, but I can't sing anything from Into the Woods. I've been thinking about singing The Winner Takes it all (from Mamma Mia!...well, I've never seen the broadway version, I've only seen the movie) or On my Own from Les Mis.

I think if I can get this audition right, I might have a slight chance at this role. Any advice? Much appreciated (:

And any tips for the dialogue reading at auditions?

Neither of those songs are good choices in this case. Find a copy of the script online and familiarize yourself with it.

Ok thanks.
Do you have any song recommendations?

1 minute 30 seconds into the video is when Jack's mother starts singing. As you know from watching the taped recording Jack's mother sings mainly in the prologues of Act I and a bit in Act II. Having played Jack I know the most difficult part about her singing (For our Jack's mother anyway) is the tempo at which she has to sing. It's actually a lot more complicated than it looks.

The two songs you suggested don't suit Jack's Mother at all. Jack's Mother is a desperate woman trying to provide for her idiotic son, all the while wishing for a bigger, better, and richer life. Try to keep that in mind when thinking of songs.

Haha, I figured they weren't very Jack's Mother-ish.
I'm just having trouble coming up with songs that suit her. I figured the vocal range in those songs were kind of in her vocal range.

I'm thinking about I dreamed a Dream from Les Mis. I'm liking that one a lot, and I'll probably sing that if I don't think of anything else. Is I dreamed a Dream ok? Embarassed If it's not, more advice would be lovely (:

Of the options listed so far I'd definitely say I Dreamed A Dream is the most appropriate choice but I just ... I don't know. I can't think of a song that would be appropriate for Jack's Mother, if I figure one out I'll post back!

If anything the only Sondheim character that reminds me of Jack's Mother is (in a twisted way) Mrs. Lovett but Sweeney might be a bit too over used now :\

Haha, thank you so much. I really love all your advice, it's helping me so much (:

I wish I found this forum sooner though Razz

That's why I didn't post any songs. I couldn't think of any. Les Mis isn't probably the best choice, but character-wise it works. Look at Sondheim shows and songs is the best bet.

I really like the idea of a Mrs. Lovett song, I doubt they'll be overdone, schools don't usually have many girls going for Jack's Mom and I don't think any of them would really connect Jack's Mom with Mrs. Lovett, Mrs. Lovett of the movie is not very Jack's Motherish but original Mrs. Lovett is. I can certainly see something like "By the Sea" working; it would show Jack's Mom's sort of... greedy side?

I had a realization! Beautiful ~ Sunday in the Park With George

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFSuvg8NAvQ

1:52 into it the song begins. It speaks to how life is changing around Jack's Mother's eyes and how she wishes things could go back to when things were beautiful and better, her son was younger, his husband was still around etc. If you could figure out how to sing it without George's interference I think it could be perfect Smile

Plus it helps the woman who plays the mother in both this and Into The Woods is the same woman Wink

That WOULD be absolutely perfect! Note to self: get the dvd already--I can't believe I forgot she was in the show!
