J&H AuditionHey!I'm new here... somehow I stumbled across this forum by sheer coincidence and thought, "AWESOME". Okay, here's my dilemma. I'm planning to audition for "Jekyll and Hyde" for a youth theatre company in my area (in May). I've performed with them like 3...or was it 4 or 5 other times...? Well, either way, this company knows me...Anyways, I'm planning to go for either Lucy or Emma. Here's the thing - I normally sing ballad type songs for auditions with this company so I'm sure if I wanted to go for Emma I'd have a pretty good chance... I'd like to switch things up a bit and show off a different side and go more for Lucy. What's a good song that's a little more up tempo (a la "Bring on the Men") for mezzo to soprano range (I'm a soprano - but I can do most mezzo as long it's not *too* low). Basically I just want a fun song to entertain everyone at the auditions with. Any ideas???? I'd really appreciate them! Thanks!! Jo |

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure Emma's parts are higher than Lucy's...so you might have a better chance with her.

Emma's parts are def. higher than Lucy's. You have to be a serious soprano to be able to sing her part in "Your Work and Nothing More". I think she goes up to something like a D above the staff. As far as Lucy goes, you need to have a good belt, but it's not ridiculously low, you also have to be able to move well, so thats something that you should consider too. In the end, they are both great, but very different parts.

I thought the D was optional...? I know in "Bring On the Men" Lucy goes a wee bit low, but that song isn't in the show anymore. Still, Emma sounds much more like the OP's range. |

If you really want to do a song thats fun...i'd go for 'good and evil' Lucy sings it, it's really upbeat, plus if you can dance...it's be a great number to dance to too! but i might just be being biased as i think it's a fantastic song!

1. Good n' Evil is not fun. It bores the crap out of 50% of the theater-going population (obviously, that includes me). 2. Isn't it usually a bad idea to do a song from the show unless the directors ask you to? |

A1. well the other 50% of theatre goers (with an open mind!! which i guess includes me!) find it an upbeat song, which asks some interesting questions!!
A2. If it's an 'Amdram' production then they tend to want songs from the shows, if its not, then to any show song thats going to do your voice jutice! |

1. Me not liking the song doesn't mean I don't have an open mind. I've listened to it live and recorded by several different actresses just to see if I'd like it...nope, still think it sucks. And I don't quite think it's a good audition piece. 2. Regardless of what production it is, they should say "sing a song from the show" if that's what they want to hear...and if they don't say that, I think it's in better taste to sing something from a different show. |

Hmmm
If you are more comfortable with Emma's notes, then I'd intend to audition for her. Songs like Once upon a dream are great to audition with (if they want songs from the show). Also if you want something in between the high soprano and lower mezzo, sympathy tenderness is good. |

I didnt mean you dont have an open mind in regards to not liking the song! i wasmore making refference to the 50% of all theatre goers! you may well be right, but i think it's a bit of an asumption! |

I've never done an official survey, but we've had the discussion quite often. |

Another auditionHi everyone,I'm not overly familiar with this show, but there's an audition coming up in a few weeks... From what I've read here, Emma seems to be the soprano role, is there any belting involved? I'm definately a very high legit soprano... I usually play the dumb blonde girl in the white dress |
