It sucks, It sucks!I want to be cast as Motel in the upcoming production of Fiddler. But I doubt I will, because I am not a wiry, skinny type like the movie. I have a few pounds...it sucks.

Sorry... If you're sure that this is the case, you have my empathy. Good luck with the auditions, nevertheless.

The production of Fiddler I was in, our Motel was short and somewhat stocky. He was also about a foot shorter than the girl playing Tzeitel. However, he had great characterization, and totally nailed the role!
I guess what I'm trying to say is, not all directors try to copy the movie. So relax, give your best audition, and see what happens!

I never cared much for the movie Motel, played by Leonard Frey. His laugh was a nervous titter that he never really shook free of; sometimes at inappropriate times, like right after his excited "I got it!" (his sewing machine). All too often he came across as such a silly twit that sometimes I think Monty Python's John Cleese couldn't have done worse! In fairness to Leonard, he sang "Miracle of Miracles" creditably, with good orchestral backup (John Williams was the movie's conductor), and punctuated throughout by Rosalind (Tzeitel) Harris's laughter.
I never saw Austin Pendleton's original portrayal of Motel on Broadway, nor Jonathan Lynn's in London. A local company where I live had a good Motel, truer to the character (he later played one of Horace Vandergelder's clerks in Hello, Dolly). I shudder to think of someone who has previously played the spineless (until the very end) Ensign Frank Pulver in Mister Roberts going on to play Motel; maybe it should be the other way around!

In the production I was in, our Tevye looked like you would expect Tevye to look - a big barrell of a man. In talking to him, he said he once played Motel!
He said it was more the character he portrayed and not the physical look (obviously!) that worked.
Good luck!

Exactly....your physical appeearance isn't as important as how you portray the character. I always thought of Motel as a goober. I've known many goobers in my life and they have come in all shapes and sizes

physical look is indeed as important in many shows..fiddler isnt one of them nessesarily.

Agreed. If you do well in the audition when you read for Motel, I don't see why you wouldn't have a chance. I also dislike the Motel from the movie and back when I did Fiddler, both times, our Motel was not super thin.

Yes, I meant in reference to this particular character. Physical appearance is very important in lots of shows and improtant to many characters. I just don't think Motel is one of them.

This makes me feel a lot better. I want to go for this role, It's the one that I want to do in Fiddler. And it is a professional production, so I am crossing my fingers.

The look is a small part, usually casts of live shows aren't cast to look like the movie. As long you play the part well you are just as likely to get the part as someone who is thinner.
