It was long overdue.

I'm crying it is really so sad gosh two of my Fave shows (Les mis and rent) close in one year this is just really a sad day for me.
*BroadwayLights*

Yeah...I just found out...I'm sad.

I'm sad because I never got the chance to see it....I finally get to go to NY and see a show but Rent wasn't one of the choices...

Oh well....chances are that sometime in my lifetime (I'm 19) there will be a revival and I'll catch it then.

More than likely, my friend.

Well, I can't say I didn't see it coming. Ultimately, this business is about money, and Rent has not been raking it in like it used to. I (and many others) will be sad to see it go. I've not always been the greatest champion of the current state of things at the show, but that doesn't mean I won't miss it.

Theater stopped growing in the 1950s. Great theater music always reflected the streets, but by the '60s, what did Hello, Dolly! reflect? Nothing. Theater disconnected from the music of its time. But Rent helped, which wasn't necessarily an easy thing to do. There's always been a theatrical element in rock, but in a way, it's easier to write for a stage production, because with a song you have to create the theatrical elements. On stage, those elements are there.

I don't think there's anything that inherently keeps rock fans out of the theater except that the theater has not presented music they want to hear. Rent made the grade. Rent changed that, not just with rock and roll, but brilliant marketing that's told a younger audience this is their show. And once that young audience came in, they discovered a story that was always fascinating (at least to me), a story in which they saw the New York of those times - dangerous, shadowy, fearful, but always a glimmer of hope. It's a story where music enhances the telling, and this show was like combining rock and roll with opera.

I think people were waiting for something like this. And now...we begin waiting again.

No!!!!! i haven't even seen it on Broadway yet! I MUST! Before July!
Is it coming to Chicago any time soon?
Bristian

It is coming to Chicago on tour! I'm going!

It's sometime in February for 5 days. I'm going on the final performance just because I hadn't been to a final performance of a show. I was close for the Chicago production of Putnam County though. I was at the matinee and the evening performance was the final.

I almost talked my mom into getting tickets to go see the final performance of this on Broadway

It's SO unfair:
It's closing
It's coming to my town THE SAME DAYS AS THE SCHOOL PRODUCTION OF THE WIZ AT THE SAME TIMES
And I'm moving to the other side of the universe so going to see the Revival in NY would be impractical Sad

not cool at all.
bwaylover_1315

I saw rent on broadway right after new years.... just in time! but it had a really good run... 12 years!

Yes, the world hates you and is going to close all your favorite shows right before you get to see them. Life sucks, huh?

Anno_Domini

C'mon people, it had a damn good run.

...in fact, considering it's been running for more than 10 years, why haven't you seen it yet if you're so eager to do so?

On that note, I haven't seen it yet either. 've seen the movie, that's enough for me....for now. I mean there are plenty of other shows to see on the G.W. Way
lilmissbroadway

That's true. God, I feel sorry for the next show to do something there! They'll have to make renovations and repaint everything in the whole theatre!
ChorusKidx3

I hated this news when i first heard it.
musikal_geek

Well no one's going to see the show anymore. No point in performing a show for a house full of empty seats. Neutral
Elphaba22

im going to see it this week, my mom just surprised me with 2nd row seats! <3
Trevor reincarnate

It's never going to close.
It's all a scam.
