is this a good song?Is "Goodnight My Someone" from the Music Man a good song to audition for Belle? My voice teacher picked it out because it was a ballad like Home.
If anybody has the sheet music for the show, what timing are most of the songs in? Thank you so much!

It could work. I'm sorry that I can't add anything more than that, but yes, that song could for your audition.

No, definitely not. "Home" is mainly belting and "Goodnight, My Someone" is pure sop 1. They are both ballads, yes, but the voice types of Marian and Belle are not very much alike at all. I would choose something more along the lines of "Ribbons Down My Back" from Hello, Dolly.

I beg to differ. While some girls may wish to sing "Goodnight, My Someone" as a soprano 1, frilly, heroine of the show song, it can be done with more power, for lack of a better word. While Shirley Jones takes the first route in the original film, Kristin Chenowith takes the second in the Disney remake. I wouldn't call it full-out belting, but she didn't sing the whole song in a pretty head voice and vibratto it to death! I thought it was a nice change and worked very effectively. This was shown even more so in "My White Knight", which, by the way, might be an even better song from The Music Man for your audition. So, "Goodnight My Someone" would be prefectly adequate, but you should also look at "My White Knight".

Well, my personal opinion is that the song sounds much better when it is not belted at all, which is how it was written to be. I played the part of Marian and she is not supposed to sound at all like Belle (as in belting.) So...once again, I would not choose "Goodnight, My Someone" for your audition. I also thought of some more songs for you...
If I Were a Bell - Guys and Dolls
You're a Queer One, Julie Jordan/Mister Snow - Carousel
How Lovely to be a Woman - Bye, Bye Birdie
They're good song choices for Belle!

I agree that you should go with something else Disney. Try something from Aida. There are a lot of good songs in there. "The past is now another land" relates well to Belle, because it's all about how Aida was taken from her home. And it's for a mezzo, so I would say try something like that.

Remember, Belle shouldn't be belting everything out, either.
You might be able to swing "Goodnight, My Someone," but I wouldn't try "My White Knight" - that's just too much of a stretch.

Thank you! I'm looking at The Past is Another Land, In My Own Little Corner, Goodnight, and Climb Every Mountain. I've never heard the Aida soundtrack before, so once the wind calms down a bit (I'm in Ernesto right now, its not that bad) I'll go out and buy it.
Thank you all for your help!

You could use a song from another Disney musical...they are all pretty much interchangeable...or even look at the cartoon movie "Anastasia"...
That's the vocal color they are really looking for...
Aida may be a bit too "Pop-y" for B&B, however...I would look more at songs like "Part of Your World", "A Whole New World", "Journey to the Past", "God Bless the Outcasts", etc...
Hope that helped!
