Is that a moustache?Ok, so I was looking at the cover of my libretto for the show with the original window card for the show on it and I notice that it appears that Sweeney, Len Cariou, has a moustache barely visable above his rather lagre lips. Is it a moustache? Why is it there? Did he originally have one when the illustrator, Frank "Fraver" Verlizzo, drew the duo? Just curious.
I'm looking for a larger image to post so we can examine it better.

I found a bigger one with a clearer moustache.

I know absolutely nothing about why he has a mustache on the libretto but I do believe that is a mustache there. Maybe the illustrator just thought that this character would have a cool mustache, i mean most likely the original duo didn't have such enormous lips so the illustrator may have just taken some creative license.

Will it is a carachature. That is why their heads and facial expressions are so big.

That's a good point...they may not have yet been casted and they may have just been going on the costume design scetches.

I'm not certain, but I believe the male cartoon may be an older stock image, and Angella and the razor were added for the poster. Note the obvious similarities to Landsbury's Lovett look (hair, dress, apron, large eyes) and hardly any to Cariou (in clothes or face--notice that not only does the male cartoon wear a mustache, but also a full beard). The male cartoon image is used on the cover of a book of antiquated English expletives.

It's very possible that the Sweeney character is from another source. If they had been drawn for the same picture, wouldn't Ms Lovett more likely hold his hand rather than his jacket?
I don't know.

The two charactatures appear to be slightly different artistic styles too.
*I'm an artist, BTW*

correct. the "Sweeney" image is an old victorian caracature. it was used in beer advertising.

i've never been particularly fond of that artwork.
Lovett looks like the Duchess from Alice in Wonderland.

SHE DOES!
I'm not a huge fan of it either...I like the most recent revival artwork the best out of the ones that I've seen.
