Is It Just Me?

Is it just me, or do less and less theatre groups to The Music Man nowadays?

I haven't heard of a production near me in awhile. Is it just in my area?
Brigantine

I haven't seen any do it in the last 5 years in my old area of central MO, and haven't heard of any doing it in my new area of south central PA.
???
I love the show and if you can correctly cast it, it can be a HUGE success and a wonderful thing.

I kept asking my old community theater why they never did it (would have been a BIG hit in our area and audience for sure) and they said because the directors hated it. Not sure why, no one had a specific reason.

A pity. playing Marian in this show ... wow almost 7 years ago- was probably the best theater experience I'd ever had.

I know in my area I hadn't seen it for years, then it seemed like everyone was doing it at one time.

I dunno, I think the show is alive and well. I just think that it, like many shows, is performed in waves.

We are getting ready to hold auditions here, but it almost wasn't the show that was submitted. The director is not a big fan of the classics, but a friend of hers convinced her to read his copy of the script and she was so impressed with the writing that she submitted it.

To be honest, I hated it until I recently watched the 1962 film with Robert Preston. Every community theatre production that I had ever seen was boring and lifeless. I always got really bored and antsy in the pantsy when I would have to 'suffer' through it. I really hope that a certain guy auditions for Harold, because I don't know of anyone else who is charismatic enough for it to not be a flop here, too. I think we're going to have at least 9 women fighting over Eulalie! I'll be happy just singing "Wells Fargo Wagon!" Smile

I'm going to make an analogy.
Try to follow me here.

Matthew Broderick is to Music Man as Tom Cruise is to Scientology.

Scared everyone away.

Catch my drift?
PappyCat

I love Matthew Broderick, I thought he did a marvelous job in The Producers.

That being said, he was a terrible TERRIBLE Harold Hill. TERRIBLE.
Brock07

I wouldnt say that he was terrible presay.....but he couldn't hold a light to Robert Preston, that's for sure.
Mistress

I haven't seen the new version, but The Cheno scared me away from it...how on earth did she get Marion Paroo?

On a better note, a local theatre festival is putting it on as one of its 2 annual musicals. I'm really excited too...Stratford usually does really nice musical productions, although I'm suprised that they didn't offer Harold Hill to Colm Feore or that he didn't take it if they did...oh well, Jonanthan Goad is still a marvelous actor...yay for Music Man! (Me an my English teacher are both extrtemely happy about it)

She was riding a wave of success....didn't she do this right after Wicked?

If not, that kinda screws my theory...ignore me...lol

Could the rights have been restricted for a while (after the tv version).

My high school just did it last year. I was Constable Locke and the farmer in Iowa Stubborn. The show was a complete 100% blast (the first stand ovation a theater production has gotten at our school!) and I have no regrets... except the fact that this show has made me continually typecast as cops and farmers during school shows.

High schools in the greater Washington, DC, area frequently perform The Music Man. (A production by our local high school just opened this past weekend.) Community theatres in the region also perform it. But, I can’t recall a professional production of The Music Man in the Washington area.

Hey welcome to the forum from a fellow Northern-Virginian, but she currently lives in Europe...

I know two people in real life who saw, I believe, that production of Music Man. I don't know what they thought about it except in their reviews.

And I concur...I don't remember any professional show of "The Music Man" as well as many "Music Man" shows...for some reason, I have a slight memory that a summer program that I'm *hopefully* doing this summer did Music Man, or I may just be mixing up different summer programs.
Nettik

Certainly not the case here!

In the past two years, there have been three productions of "The Music Man" that I've been aware of, and possibly a fourth that I heard about, but I'm not sure if it may have been one of the same productions.
